FLCL
The six episode OVA FLCL (also known as Fooly Cooly) is one of the most famous works by Gainax. The show takes place in the seemingly normal town of Mabase. Naota is a 12 year old boy living an ordinarily and somewhat boring life until he is struck in the head by a guitar swung by the mysterious woman Haruko. This prompts various strange things to start happening, most significantly that various robots start coming out of his head. One of the robots, named Canti stays with Naota and uses him as a weapon while fighting off the various robots produced by the mysterious Medical Mechanica plant. The show was directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (Evangelion, Diebuster), who was supported by writer Yoji Enokido (Evangelion, RahXephon) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, Nadia). The show also features a very popular soundtrack by the Japanese rock band The Pillows. The series was originally released in the US by Synch-Point, and was later re-released by FUNimation. It has also aired in the U.S. on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. In 2016, Production I.G. and Adult Swim announced the codproduction of two additional seasons totalling 12 episodes. Titled FLCL Alternative and FLCL Progressive, the two series debuted on Adult Swim in 2018 before a later Japanese broadcast.
