RahXephon
In early 2002 Studio BONES released the sci-fi mecha drama RahXephon. Directed by Yutaka Izubuchi, with character designs by Akihiro Yamada (The Twelve Kingdoms), mechanical designs by Michiaki Sato (Mars Daybreak) and Yoshinori Sayama (Patlabor), the series is influenced by Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Brave Raideen and the writings of James Churchward. RahXephon tells the story of Ayato Kamina, a student in Tokyo who dreams of being a painter. One day, Tokyo is attacked by an unknown force and Ayato is lead by his mysterious classmate Reika Mishima to the giant clay doll called the RahXephon. With the RahXephon, Ayato discovers that the world he knew is false and he is now the deciding factor in a war between two races over the fate of the Earth. In 2003 the series was made into a compilation movie and a short OVA was released as part of the Japan-only PlayStation 2 game. The series and movie were released in the U.S. from ADV Films/Section23 Films, but the OVA was not.
