Combat Mecha Xabungle

Xabungle

Wedged between two of director Yoshiyuki Tomino's darker shows, Space Runaway Ideon and Aura Battler Dunbine, Combat Mecha Xabungle (also known as Blue Gale Xabungle) provides a stark contrast as a more lighthearted and slapstick type of show. It stars Jiron Amos, a young man who swears revenge after the outlaw Timp Sharon murders his parents. Taking place on the planet Zola, the ruling class known as the Innocent have decreed that any crime must be forgiven if retribution has not taken place within three days. Despite this time period having already passed, Jiron still pursues Timp, stealing the blue mecha Xabungle from the trader Carrying Cargo. Along the way he befriends a group of bandits known as the Sand Rats and Cargo's daughter Elchi. The show's staff would feature several veteran Tomino collaborators, including mecha designs by Kunio Okawara (Mobile Suit Gundam, Zambot 3) and character designs by Tomonori Kogawa (Ideon, Dunbine). After finishing its 50 episode run in early 1983, a movie, Xabungle Graffiti was released approximately six months later, providing a recap of the series and a revised ending.
