Zambot 3

Invincible Superman Zambot 3

Premiering on Japanese TV in 1977, Invincible Superman Zambot 3 was one of Yoshiyuki Tomino's earliest mecha anime. Earth has been invaded by mysterious alien beings known as the Gaizock. Humanity's only hope is the Jin family, descendants of a group of alien refugees from the planet Beal, who possess the powerful combining robot Zambot 3 and accompanying ship, the King Beal. Unique for its time, Zambot 3 displays both realism and a dark storyline that would be common in Tomino's later works. Despite being humanity's only hope, the Jin family are discriminated against and blamed for the Gaizock invasion, especially as the destruction grows more and more severe. Production-wise, Tomino was joined by character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who had previously worked with him on Brave Raideen and would later work with him on the first two Gundam series. Mecha designs were provided by Rioji Hirayama and Kunio Okawara, who would also later be involved in the Gundam franchise. The show has not been released in North America.
