In January C.E. 71, the Atlantic Federation’s first line of mobile suits entered the battlefield following the ZAFT attack on the Heliopolis space colony. Soon after, the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam was briefly captured and held at the Eurasian Federation space fortress Artemis. Not wanting to be left behind, the Eurasian Federation launched its own mobile suit development program, which produced three prototype Hyperion Gundam units. Although visually similar to the Atlantic Federation’s mobile suits, the Hyperion Gundam’s systems and armaments differed. The Hyperion Gundam lacked the Atlantic Federation’s Phase Shift armor technology, but it compensated with the “Armure Lumiere” mono-phase lightwave shield system. Based on the Umbrella of Artemis, the “Armure Lumiere” could be used like a standard shield or as an all-encompassing 360-degree barrier to protect from enemy fire. The system allowed the pilot to fire weapons outward while protected from enemy attack, but it was a drain on the Hyperion Gundam’s battery. In addition, the shield could be configured as a spike-like beam weapon capable of penetrating other lightwave shields. The Hyperion Gundam was also equipped with a pair of back-mounted “Forfanterie” beam cannons, as well as CIWS guns. Its armaments were rounded out by five “Romteknica” beam knives, one of which was mounted on the “Zastava Stigmate” beam sub-machine gun.

Hyperion Gundam Unit 1, assigned to Canard Pars, first saw action in late C.E. 71. As a special operative for the Eurasian Federation, Canard was obsessed with defeating Three Ships Alliance pilot Kira Yamato so that he could become the Ultimate Coordinator. Along the way, Canard crossed paths with Serpent Tail mercenary Gai Murakumo and Junk Guild pilot Lowe Guele, who were both involved with a mission to deliver the YMF-X000A Dreadnought Gundam to Earth. Canard engaged Dreadnought Gundam pilot Prayer Reverie in battle, which resulted in heavy damage for the Hyperion Gundam. After escaping detention at Artemis, Canard fought CAT1-X2/3 Hyperion Gundam Unit 2, piloted by Balsam Arendo. After penetrating Balsam’s lightwave barrier, Canard killed him and cannibalized Unit 2’s parts to repair Unit 1. Afterward, Canard attacked the Atlantic Federation’s lunar base to steal a Neutron Jammer Canceler. Now equipped with nearly unlimited nuclear energy, Canard had a final showdown with Prayer outside an abandoned space colony at Lagrange point 4. The damage to the Hyperion Gundam caused the Neutron Jammer Canceler to overload and explode, but Canard was rescued by Prayer. After the Bloody Valentine War, Canard briefly joined the Junk Guild and piloted the modified YMF-X000A/H Dreadnought H.
