Code Geass Stage 3: The False Classmate

0
Summary

Lelouch pulls a gun on Clovis, and Clovis says he’s happy to see Lelouch because he’d supposedly died during the invasion of Japan. He asks Lelouch if he wants to come back to the motherland, but Lelouch says he doesn’t want to be a tool on the diplomatic stage anymore. He recalls the way his mother Marianne was killed in what was staged to look like a terrorist attack. He assumes that other princesses were jealous because Marianne was a commoner by birth. Using his power, Lelouch orders Clovis to tell him who murdered his mother. Clovis tells Lelouch that Prince Schneizel El Britannia and Princess Cornelia Li Britannia should know. Lelouch asks if they were the masterminds, but he realizes that Clovis doesn’t have much information. After being released from Lelouch’s power, Clovis panics and says he didn’t commit the murder or order anyone to. He pleads for his life, but Lelouch says the world can’t be changed with pretty words alone and shoots Clovis. The next day, Milly bonks Lelouch on the head in the academy’s student council room for daydreaming. She says they have to work hard and use guts to examine club budgets, but Lelouch comments that cheap magic like that doesn’t work. Shirley jokes that it’s affecting her, and Milly agrees, noting that Shirley has developed nice breasts. In the hallway, Shirley calls Milly a pervert and Nina notes that she’s always been that way. Several students watch a news report about Shinjuku, and Lelouch wonders why there’s no reports about Clovis’ death. He suddenly becomes sick and rushes to the restroom. Concluding that his nerves are still too weak for this kind of thing, he assumes that Clovis’ death is being kept secret to avoid spreading confusion. Elsewhere, Jeremiah and Viletta return to base for an inspection that’s being conducted into how Clovis’ assassin got past so much security. Viletta wonders what the Purists will do without Clovis, but Jeremiah says he will issue orders. Lelouch sees Kallen at school and recognizes her, and Rivalz asks him if he has a crush on her. Lelouch says it’s strange seeing her because she hasn’t been in class since the beginning of the year, and Rivalz explains that it’s due to her having a weak body. Outside, several girls eating lunch with Kallen run away when a bee flies by. Kallen kills the bee and regrets having chosen to fake a weak girl. She’s surprised to see Lelouch standing next to her, and he uses his power to ask if she piloted a Glasgow in Shinjuku. She confirms that, and when he asks why she’s a terrorist, she tells him that she’s half Japanese. She’s released from the power, and when Lelouch tells her to say nothing about Shinjuku, she asks what he means. He tries to use his power, but it doesn’t work and she presses the question. Shirley calls out to them from a nearby window, and Lelouch thinks up a quick excuse to run away. At their residence, Lelouch’s blind and paralyzed sister Nunnally works on origami with her maid, Sayoko Shinozaki. Bartley tells his researchers to pack up and move to Narita. Although he and the other generals don’t remember abandoning Clovis, they’ll be in trouble because they did. Lelouch has dinner with Nunnally and wonders how long they’ll be safe with the Ashfords. He decides he wants to create a world where she can be safe.

The next morning, Lelouch decides he needs to know what his power can do. He asks a teacher what the questions will be on the next test, and the teacher tells him. When he releases the teacher and asks again, the teacher laughs it off and tells Lelouch to study. Lelouch realizes he can’t use it on the same person more than once. Kallen calls Ohgi and says she doesn’t like being in school, but Ohgi tells her to lay low. She wonders if Lelouch knows her identity and if he’s the mystery man from Shinjuku. She thinks in class about the similarity in their voices, but concludes she can’t just go by the memory of a voice. Shirley tries to speak to Lelouch after class, but he quickly cuts her off and tells Kallen he wants to talk to her. He takes her to the clubhouse and says there won’t be any interruptions, but just then Nina, Shirley, Rivalz and Milly enter the room. Elsewhere, Bartley sits with Clovis’ coffin as it’s escorted by Sutherlands down a street. The escort squad comes under attack from Purists led by Jeremiah. Jeremiah rips open the roof of the APC carrying the coffin and tells Bartley to get out. He says he won’t accept Bartley’s nonsense about not remembering things. Lelouch asks Milly why she’s wheeling out so much food, and she tells him it’s because they’re adding Kallen to the student council. Everyone introduces themselves, including Nunnally. Rivalz wants to celebrate with champagne, but Shirley struggles with him to grab it. He tosses it to Lelouch, and the cork pops and causes the champagne to pour out and drench Kallen. As Kallen cleans up in the shower, Lelouch brings her some of his spare clothes. She asks how he got to the boy’s dorm so fast, and he says he lives at the clubhouse because of Nunnally’s needs. She asks Lelouch to bring her a pouch, and when he does she grabs his arm. She asks what he meant about Shinjuku, and when he asks what’s wrong with Shinjuku, she yells at him not to answer a question with a question. She reveals a knife inside the pouch and asks him if he was at Shinjuku. The phone rings, and Lelouch answers and says it’s for her. Kallen hears Lelouch’s voice telling her to come to Tokyo Tower. Lelouch says that guy sounded dangerous and asks if he was talking about some online game. Kallen quickly lies that he was, and Lelouch says he mentioned Shinjuku because someone might try to show her weird pictures or videos. Kallen realizes she was wrong, and Lelouch retrieves the voice recorder he ordered Sayoko to call in with. After Kallen dresses, Lelouch tells her about Milly’s weird club activities. They walk in and see everyone watching a news announcement about Clovis’ death. At a press conference, Jeremiah declares that Clovis has become a martyr in the fight against Elevens for peace and justice. Breaking news comes in that the prime suspect in Clovis’ murder has been arrested: Suzaku.

Commentary

The third episode brings more revelations. Lelouch’s mother was murdered in a staged terrorist attack, and he and Nunnally have been hiding with the Ashford family. He clearly wants revenge, but since even Clovis doesn’t know who was behind it, that won’t be easy. Complications ensue when Kallen returns to school under the guise of a girl with poor health. Lelouch pulls off a nice save by recording himself and staging the phone call to make Kallen think the Shinjuku guy is a separate person. Jeremiah’s Purists take some extreme actions in attacking Bartley, and it looks like they’re out for blood. They’re also looking to put a public spin on Clovis’ “martyrdom” by framing Suzaku for his murder. Lelouch certainly has plenty of problems to deal with.
