Code Geass Stage 4: His Name is Zero

0
Summary

A roughed up Suzaku is questioned by Jeremiah about the gun used to assassinate Clovis. Jeremiah says that as the son of Japan’s last prime minister, Suzaku has plenty of motivation to kill Clovis. Suzaku answers that he’s never seen the gun before and gets kicked out of the chair. Jeremiah says that Suzaku’s fingerprints were found on the gun, and that he’s also suspected of killing the special forces in Shinjuku too. He tells Suzaku that if he confesses now, he’ll be judged as an Honorary Britannian rather than as an Eleven. At the academy, Lelouch helps put Nunnally to bed. She’s worried about Suzaku, but Lelouch tells her that the news is wrong because Suzaku wouldn’t do anything like that. At the resistance hideout, Tamaki yells at Ohgi for not making an announcement to take credit for Clovis’ assassination. The next day, Lelouch uses his power on an old man. Lloyd laments the loss of his precious “part” Suzaku because no other pilot is capable of using the Lancelot so efficiently. Cecile thinks Lloyd should do something to help free Suzaku, but Lloyd says that won’t be possible. He explains that the military is now being controlled by the Purists, a faction that believes only pureblood Britannians should be allowed to serve in the military. Rivalz asks Lelouch what he wants to do since classes are cancelled, and Shirley tells them not to gamble. Kallen goes to Tokyo Tower, which has been turned into a Britannian propaganda museum. Ohgi and the others arrive, and Kallen is called to the front desk to pick up a lost item. The cell phone has a message from “Zero,” and Lelouch calls to tell Kallen and the others to get on the train. Elsewhere, Jeremiah compliments Diethard for creating Clovis’ memorial program. He asks Diethard to film Suzaku’s transfer to a military court, and Viletta thinks there might be trouble if Elevens want to rescue Suzaku because they view him as a hero. Lelouch calls Kallen and tells her and the others to come to the train’s first car. There they find Lelouch, who has concealed his identity as a masked man. He tells them that mere terrorism is useless and that their true enemy is Britannia itself, not Britannians. They demand that he remove his mask, and although he agrees, he says he’s going to show them his power, not his face. The Japanese Liberation Front debates what to do about Suzaku, and Kyoshiro Tohdoh says they have no obligation to watch the execution. Lloyd visits Suzaku in jail and tells him that the chances of the truth being exposed in the courtroom are very low.

Britannians line up on the sides of the road Suzaku will be taken down, and Diethard directs the TV broadcast. An APC carrying Suzaku arrives, surrounded by four Sutherlands commanded by Jeremiah. Cecile is upset that the Empire isn’t accepting testimony from her or Lloyd, since both of them know that Suzaku is innocent. Jeremiah gets a call that Clovis’ personal vehicle is approaching the street, and he orders that it be let through. With Ohgi in position, Kallen drives the limo, which has been made to look like Clovis’. Jeremiah orders them to get out, and the vehicle’s top suddenly catches fire, revealing “Zero.” Jeremiah fires his gun into the air, and several Knightmare VTOLs drop four Sutherlands around the limo. Jeremiah tells Lelouch to take off his mask, and Lelouch snaps his fingers, causing the limo’s rear to break away and reveal the “poison gas” container. Jeremiah realizes that Lelouch has taken everyone hostage without them realizing it. He wants to shoot Lelouch, and Lelouch offers a trade: Suzaku for the poison gas container. Jeremiah says he can’t do that because Suzaku is accused of high treason for murdering Clovis. Diethard runs outside with a camera and begins recording just as Lelouch announces that he killed Clovis himself. The Sutherlands point their rifles at Lelouch, and he says he’s going to announce orange. Kallen begins driving forward, and Lelouch opens part of his mask and uses his power to order Jeremiah to let him and Suzaku go. Jeremiah gives the order, over the objections of Viletta and pilot Kewell Soresi. Suzaku walks over to Lelouch, and Viletta jumps into her Sutherland to attack. She comes under attack from Jeremiah’s Sutherland, and he tells her to follow his orders. Lelouch unleashes gas from the container and jumps off the bridge with Kallen and Suzaku. Ohgi fires a net from his MR1 Knightmare to catch them. Kewell fires at the MR1, but Ohgi ejects and escapes. Jeremiah points his rifle at Kewell’s cockpit and tells him that any further actions will be considered treasonous. Back at the resistance base, Ohgi acknowledges that they may be able to win if they follow Zero. Lelouch tells Suzaku to join him because Britannia is a worthless country, but Suzaku says he wants to change Britannia from the inside. He doesn’t believe the end justifies the means, and he plans to return to his trial. Lelouch says that’s crazy because the trial is rigged, but Suzaku says he doesn’t want innocent Elevens or Honorary Britannians to be accused. Nunnally listens to the news and hears that Suzaku may be acquitted. She hears the door open and thinks it’s Sayoko, but it’s actually the green haired girl.

Commentary

Things are certainly getting more complicated. Now that he’s in a position of power, Jeremiah has set up Suzaku for Clovis’ assassination. It all proceeds smoothly, until Lelouch appears on the scene as the masked man “Zero” to throw a kink in the works. Using his power and some clever deceptions, he’s able to free Suzaku and win the loyalty of Ohgi’s resistance fighters. Jeremiah is certainly going to be in a bad position after attacking his own people to let Suzaku escape. Lelouch reaches out to Suzaku, but Suzaku is stubborn and believes that he can change Britannia from the inside. The episode’s end also features the surprise return of the green haired girl, who was shot in the head back in episode 1.
