Summary

Lelouch wonders if you could hold happiness in your hands, what form would it take? Even if it doesn’t happen on a daily basis, a gentle world exists. At Ashford, Kallen feels nervous and covers her breasts with her arm as Shirley takes measurements for a dress. Milly is surprised that Shirley is good at sewing because she doesn’t look it. Nunnally comments that she’s looking forward to the handmade dress party, and Milly comments that it’s a good way to keep the party from becoming a boring competition over brand names and price tags. Milly asks Kallen if she’s decided on an escort for the party yet, and Shirley wonders if it’s Lelouch. Kallen denies that and says she doesn’t have any feelings for Lelouch because she’s not good with egotistical types. Everyone then starts quizzing her on whom she actually likes, asking if it’s Suzaku or Rivalz. In a nearby hallway, Suzaku, Lelouch and Rivalz sneeze as they carry boxes of supplies. Rivalz mentions that when you sneeze it means that people are talking about you. He wonders if the girls on the student council are talking about them, but Suzaku asks why they would be. Lelouch explains that the girls are probably debating which of them should be their escort. Rivalz asks Lelouch about his plans, but Lelouch answers that he’ll just go with Nunnally as always. Rivalz thinks that’s a waste because Lelouch could have his pick of any girl, so Suzaku offers to take Nunnally. That angers Lelouch, so he comes up with an excuse that he has to do it because of Nunnally’s health needs. They walk into the room and are all surprised by how Kallen looks in the dress. Lelouch jokes that fine feathers make fine birds, but Nunnally thinks that’s going too far, especially since he’s escorting Kallen to the dance. Lelouch is shocked and says he’s going with Nunnally, but she answers that she’ll just go with Suzaku. Lelouch asks why, so she explains that they drew names for which boy to go with. Rivalz asks who he’s going with and instantly loses interest when he finds out he’s going with Shirley and not Milly. Lelouch refuses to accept the pairings, and Kallen thinks he has a problem with her. Arthur suddenly jumps off the table and runs near Kallen, but she moves and causes the dress to fall off. In the present, Lelouch thinks to himself that a year ago his life was filled with childish episodes like this, but he didn’t realize at the time how priceless each of those moments would become.

Commentary

This picture drama actually turns backward and looks back at an event from the first season. Everyone is getting ready for another one of Milly’s weird parties, and this time it involves handmade dresses. As you’d expect, it’s filled with the kind of discussions teenagers would have in high school about the people they’re attracted to. Kallen becomes flustered when she’s asked which boy she likes, and Lelouch shows how obsessively overprotective he is of Nunnally. Rivalz expresses open disappointment at not going with Milly, but a loser like him probably shouldn’t complain about having to go with a girl like Shirley who is out of his league anyway. The happy moment is tempered by Lelouch’s monologue in the present about how he didn’t appreciate those things at the time.
