Code Geass R2 Turn 4: Counterattack at the Gallows

0
Summary

As a boy, Rolo used his Geass power to assassinate a Britannian Senator named William Helmsly. In the present, he tells Lelouch that he doesn’t recall how many people he’s killed over the years. All he ever did was kill people, until he was assigned to act as Lelouch’s fake brother. Lelouch asks him if he can stop time, but Rolo refuses to answer. He states that his orders are to kill Lelouch if he regains his memories of Zero. Lelouch then begins counting aloud and says that he was counting in his head since Rolo showed up, but that number doesn’t match the clock on a computer. He declares that Rolo didn’t stop time, just Lelouch’s sense of time. Rolo says that even knowing that won’t help, and Lelouch tells him that if he lets him go, he’ll get him C.C. He then asks Rolo if he has any hope for his future beyond his mission, and he says killing him won’t accomplish that mission. Lelouch promises to bring C.C. to Rolo tomorrow. At the Chinese consulate, Kallen asks C.C. why things have turned out this way if Lelouch used his Geass on Gao Hai, but they’re interrupted by the entrance of Li. Kallen asks Li if Gao Hai approved the formation of the United States of Japan, and Li explains that Gao Hai is to be executed. C.C. believes that’ll work out well, as his death can be blamed on a battle with the Black Knights. Lelouch and Rivalz ride a train to the police station to pick up Rivalz’s bike, and Lelouch thinks about what he’ll do to deal with Rolo now that he’s bought himself a bit of time. He also wonders how he can rescue Tohdoh and the others, as well as Nunnally. Rolo heads to the secret surveillance room and overhears several agents complaining to Viletta about Rolo being a grim reaper who kills his allies. Outside the consulate, Tamaki wonders if the Zero that appeared on TV is the real one, but Chiba says it doesn’t matter because he’ll abandon them. Guilford considers his own action inelegant, and he tells the Glaston Knights that Zero will certainly show up because he needs to create miracles and gain the support of the public. Li asks Gao Hai why he allowed the formation of the USJ without the approval of the Forbidden City. He also asks what Empress Tianzi thinks about this, but Gao Hai says he doesn’t care because Zero will bring him happiness, so Li kills him for treason. At school, Lelouch examines Rolo’s activity log to find a way to save the Black Knights. Chiba repeats that Zero betrayed them, but Tamaki is certain that Zero will save them. Disguised as a soldier, Lelouch uses Geass on Glaston Knight David T. Darlton, while Rolo knocks out a guard. Li tells Kallen that she’ll be free to move once Zero shows up. Rolo uses a voice changer to fool Britannian soldiers into believing someone else is piloting his Vincent. Guilford addresses the crowd of Japanese and orders the Sutherland pilots to take aim. Just then, Lelouch appears in his custom Burai and tells him he isn’t executing terrorists, but USJ soldiers.

Lelouch’s Burai slowly passes through the crowd as it approaches the execution stage. Kaguya Sumeragi watches events unfold on TV, and Diethard wants to resume the old plan, but Rakshata Chawla says that’ll only work if Zero survives. Viletta asks where Lelouch is, and an agent tells her he’s at a theater with Rolo. Lelouch asks Guilford if he’ll come out of his cockpit to talk, but Guilford declines and says he wants to settle their differences with Knightmares. Lelouch asks that their duel be one-on-one and with only one weapon, to which Guilford agrees. Lelouch asks to borrow a Knightpolice shield for his weapon, and Guilford agrees to that too. Li is disappointed and says that if Zero proves incompetent, he’ll use the Black Knights as a political tool. Lelouch asks Guilford what he would do if there was an evil that justice couldn’t defeat, and Guilford says his justice is with Cornelia. Guilford’s Gloucester charges forward, and just then a Geassed worker collapses the settlement supports around the consulate. As the ground covering falls, so do the Sutherlands. Kallen’s Guren then charges forward, followed by a Burai squad, to rescue Ohgi and the others. Guilford holds onto the ground with his lance and slash harkens, but Lelouch uses the shield as a surfboard and jumps over him. A sliding G-1 Base falls over and kills Glaston Knight Bart L. Darlton, and the Black Knights begin to rescue their captured comrades. Kallen attacks Alfred L. Darlton and kills him with her radiation wave. Rolo charges in with the Vincent and attacks several Burais, while Kallen uses a wide dispersal on her Guren to shield the Black Knights. Rolo shoots out a slash harken at Lelouch, knocking off his Burai’s left arm. David fires his sniper rifle, and Rolo sees that he won’t be able to dodge the shot, but just then Lelouch steps in and takes the damage. Rolo asks Lelouch why he did it, and Lelouch says that even if he had false memories, the time they spent together wasn’t a lie. Rolo is shocked that Lelouch would care about him, and Lelouch tells Rolo his future is with him. Guilford tosses his lance at Lelouch, but Rolo catches it. Rolo is confused, and Lelouch calls him and puts Viletta on the line, lying to her about their location. Li addresses Guilford and tells him to pull back. Later, the Black Knights celebrate their reunion. Tamaki asks what the deal is with the Vincent, and C.C. says it protected Zero, so it isn’t a foe. Rolo feels confused because C.C. is standing in front of him, but Lelouch reassures him he has a future. He then recalls his Geass orders to David to shoot at the Vincent. Lelouch thinks to himself that he’ll use Rolo until he’s worthless and throw him away. At night, Suzaku returns to Ashford Academy.

Commentary

Lelouch certainly found himself in a tough position earlier, but he managed to worm his way out of it. We learn that Rolo’s ability isn’t to stop time, but rather to freeze people’s minds and make them think time has stopped. Lelouch perfectly manipulates Rolo to use him as a tool for his own benefit. I am a bit bothered that Lelouch used the same collapsing ground technique from before and fooled the Britannians again, but I guess they weren’t expecting him to use such a brazen tactic again. He also used Guilford’s honor as a Knight against him to set up that situation, and Guilford fell for it completely. Li makes a move by killing Gao Hai, and he certainly seems like a sharp guy in the way that he reads the situation. Now that Lelouch has the Black Knights again, I’m sure he’ll pick up his plans from before, but hiding out as a student likely won’t be any easier with Suzaku back in school again.
