Dunbine Ep. 16: The Skies Above Tokyo

0
Summary

Doruboru heads through the woods towards the Zelana with supplies. On the Zelana the Dunbine‘s leg is repaired. Doruboru arrives, with 10 Bozunes from King Foizon for Nie to command. Meanwhile Shot and Zet give each of the three people from Upper Earth Drumlos, and order them to support Bern from the rear in the next battle. Bern is upset that Shot is giving orders, but Shot reveals to him that he too will be involved in the battle and will give orders from aboard the Bull Beggar. Bern talks to Drake, who agrees with Shot’s decision and thinks he should take a lower profile. Zet informs this latest news to Garalia, who is amused. He tells her to be careful with the Aura Amplifier installed in the Bastole. She takes off to join the rest of Drake’s forces. The Zelana heads to Elf Castle with the Bozunes from King Foizon. Furaon is happy they’ve arrived but wonders why they didn’t provide him with even more Aura Battlers. Nie and the others are able to tame their frustration with the King for the time being. Drake’s army arrives with Shot shouting out orders from the Bull Beggar. The three new battlers Jerryl, Feui and Allen are happy to finally be in battle, but Bern is upset with them and plans on trying his hardest. The Zelana, Fou and Dunbine head out into battle. The Bozunes seem to have little success against the enemy and multiple ones go down. The three Upper Earthlings attack the Zelana while Garalia easily blows up one of the castle’s Aura ships. Furaon Elf is so scared that he’s willing to give up the castle to Drake. Shou attacks Garalia, who receives help from the Upper Earthlings. She tells them off and battles Shou one on one. The two of them exert so much force that green light starts flowing between them and they vanish completely from Byston Well.

Garalia and Shou (and Chum, in the Dunbine) go through the Aura Road and end up on Upper Earth. At Shou’s house in Tokyo, his parents argue with each other; both are ashamed of Shou and blame the other for him “running away.” Suddenly the Dunbine appears, crashing into the house and landing on their car. Shou’s parents head outside, wondering what has happened. Shou and Chum wake up, shocked at where they are. Shou gets out of the Dunbine, but in his odd pilot suit scares everyone. Neither believe its really Shou since he got out of the Dunbine and is wearing such odd clothes. Chum flies in, scaring them even more. The police arrive and Shou’s father knocks him out of the house, refusing to believe its really him. Suddenly a news report on the TV reports on Garalia’s Bastole flying around the skies of Tokyo. Garalia, shocked about where she is destroys an airplane that she runs into while in midair. She’s completely bewildered by her surroundings, thinking a nearby skyscraper is a castle. Shou and Chum head off in the Dunbine in order to find Garalia. Chum thinks the Aura Power of Shou’s parents attracted them to this location. Shou catches up with Garalia and she won’t listen to him. She shoots at him and when he dodges it, the resulting explosion deals heavy damage to the city below. The Bastole chases the Dunbine through the city and they continue their battle in the air. News helicopters fly close by and Garalia blows up a fighter plane approaching, dealing even more damage to the city. Garalia finds herself getting very tired but won’t stop attacking Dunbine. A large number of armed helicopters approach them…

Commentary

The writers throw a pretty big curve at us by suddenly transporting both Shou and Garalia to Upper Earth, where they find their Aura Battlers even more powerful than they were on Byston Well. Shou runs into his parents, neither of which treat him very well, refusing to believe its really him. Conflict between family members is a common theme in Tomino’s work, particularly Gundam and Ideon and it appears to be showing up here in Dunbine as well. Bern appears to be getting increasingly upset with his superiors Drake and Shot, who are now overruling him in individual battles. The arrival of the three people from Upper Earth seem to make him quite nervous. Furaon Elf seems to be annoying everyone yet again, complaining even after King Foizon gives him 10 Bozunes to defend his castle with. With the scenery changing to Upper Earth for the time being hopefully we won’t see much of him for a while.
