Dunbine Ep. 34: Aura Barrier

0
Summary

Musiy, piloting a white colored Zwarth, takes on a fleet of fighter jets. Although one of the jets makes a direct hit on her, no damage is done and she easily destroys her enemies. Watching aboard the Spriggan are Shot and Zet. Shot says that chemical reactions were repressed on Byston Well which explains how powerful Aura Battlers are here on Upper Earth. Zet wants to head out on a Bastole to help her, but Shot tells him to instead search for the Zelana. On a forest filled island, Shou and Marvel work on making a radio work. Nie wants to work on defeating Drake, but Keen is worried since they will be attacked by Upper Earth’s military if they head out. Shou hears on the radio about an Aura Battleship that they believe to be the Guran Galan being in Europe and tells Nie they should head there. Suddenly a group of fighter planes arrive. Everyone initially worries, but it is revealed that a group of Aura Battlers led by Zet are approaching as well, and that’s who they spotted. Planes bombard Zet’s Bastole but because of an Aura Barrier no damage is dealt to it. The Zelana tries to make its escape but is attacked by the planes and spotted by Zet. The planes fire at the Zelana, but just like with the Bastole and Zwarth, the Aura Barrier prevents any damage from being dealt to it and the Zelana flees at top speed. Zet leads his forces towards the Zelana so Keen heads out on the Botune. Shou and Marvel quickly follow on their Aura Battlers. Surrounded by the Botune and Billbine, Zet finds himself out of ammunition and flees. More planes from Upper Earth arrive and start bombarding them with missiles, so the Zelana flees to the upper atmosphere. Chum is nervous about hitting the sea in the sky, but Shou tells her there is no such thing here on Upper Earth. Bern awakens, drifting in the middle of the ocean. A group of people arrive to save him and Bern, who doesn’t seem to understand them goes with them. On the Zelana Shou wants them to head even higher to test the strength of the Zelana on Upper Earth. The Zelana approaches China and a snow filled, chilly area. At that moment a trio of Bishot’s soldiers, Nyett, Dar and Galamitei on Vierres Aura Battlers head through the sky.

The trio of soldiers sense the enemy nearby. Meanwhile an observation plane starts following the Zelana. Shou and Marvel find that being so high in the atmosphere is making it hard on those from Byston Well. Marvel senses three planes on the radar, but they are actually the three Vierres. Marvel and Shou tell Nie to continue searching for the Guran Galan or Graon on the radar as they head out to fight the enemy. The Vierres pilots have a hard time attacking the Zelana with their machine guns so they come into close range. Marvel seems to have trouble as well attacking from long range with the Dunbine. Shou heads out on the Billbine and tells Marvel and Keen to protect the Zelana. Galamitei tells the others to prioritize on the Billbine. The Billbine transforms and flies off in an attempt to lure them away from the Zelana. He then transforms back into Aura Battler mode. The three Vierres pilots decide to combine their attacks to defeat the Billbine. Teaming up like that allows them to damage the Billbine and send it crashing towards the ground. The Billbine hits a snowy mountain and rolls down it. Marvel wants to help Shou, but at that moment Nie senses the Graon on the radar. Marvel breaks the plan and heads out to help Shou. Nie, having trouble with the radio wonders if the Graon is in the middle of a battle as well. On the Billbine Shou has passed out and Chum has trouble waking him. The three Vierres pilots search for him but miss the Billbine since its buried in snow. Shou awakens just as Dar finds him and fires at him, causing Marvel and the two other Vierres pilots to sense his location. Marvel lifts up the Billbine since Shou is too tired to move it. Galamitei, Nyett and Dar attack them, but Shou, using one of the Vierres as a springboard is able to destroy two of them. Galamitei retreats. Shou and the others realize that the greater Aura power on Upper Earth also saps their strength a lot quicker. The Zelana heads towards the Graon so they can consolidate their power. Meanwhile, Bern refuses those who saved him to see what’s in the bag he’s carrying. They decide to let him be on the deck of the ship and leave. Bern stares at the sunset and starts crying. One of the men brings him a blanket.

Commentary

There are three rather interesting aspects of this episode which makes it considerably better than the previous one. First off is the revelation that all the Aura Battlers and Aura Ships have a powerful barrier which prevents them from being harmed by those from Upper Earth. Although this somewhat contradicts what we saw when Shou first went to Upper Earth, its an interesting thing to note since the military forces on Upper Earth will really have to ‘up the ante’ to do any damage to forces from Byston Well. I mentioned a few episodes ago how Ceila Lapana seemed like an influence for Evangelion, the Aura Barriers also seem to be an influence, for the AT Fields that were used in that show. The second item of note is seeing Bern again, found in the middle of the ocean. It’s hard to tell whether Bern has suffered psychological damage, or if he simply doesn’t understand what those from Upper Earth are saying (and if so that’s a rather big screw up by the writers since the other characters don’t seem to be having this problem). Seeing him cry at the end of the episode certainly was an interesting sight. Third, this episode makes an obvious homage to the Black Tri-Stars from Tomino’s earlier Mobile Suit Gundam. Not only do Galamitei, Nyett and Dar look a lot like the Black Tri-Stars, they have similar attacks and suffer the same fate, with Shou using their leader as a springboard while attacking the others.
