Dunbine Ep. 9: Earth and Sky

0
Summary

The Zelana heads for the land of the Ferario in order to enlist their help against Drake. Chum doesn’t think they’ll get anywhere as the Ferario don’t like associating with the Komon (normal people). The Zelana enters the Wall of Tempest, a fierce storm in which the ship can barely move. The Fou falls off the ship and drifts away. Shortly after the Zelana makes it through to a wondrous landscape of flowers and trees, with Mi Ferario all over the place. Chum is scared of being punished by her “sisters” and doesn’t want to get off the ship. Shou saves a Mi Ferario stuck in a spider web but she won’t help them since a baby’s about to be born. Shou and the others go and watch as a baby Mi Ferario is born from within a flower. Meanwhile Todd and Garalia head towards Mi. The Mi Ferario Shou rescued tells our heroes if they want to see the E Ferario, go to the top of Gala mountain, although she doesn’t think they’d be able to make their way up there. The Zelana heads off anyway with the Dunbine standing outside so it can try on its own if things don’t work out. The Zelana makes its way through the clouds and water surrounds them, making it very difficult to move. Eventually the Zelana breaks its way through and makes it to the Land of Water. Ferario leader Jacoba Aon is upset with the Zelana for coming and says they have nothing to do with Silkie Mau. Jacoba forces the Zelana away with her power.

The Zelana can barely move with the stress Jacoba is putting on them. Suddenly, the Zelana appears above Dallas on Upper Earth, then immediately vanishes, returning to the Wall of Tempest. Shou docks with the Fou in his Dunbine and returns to the Zelana. The Zelana returns to Byston Well and heads out towards Mi. At that time a town in Mi is being attacked by Drake’s forces. Shou says he’s fine, but doesn’t seem to be feeling well as he heads out. Drake’s soldiers manage to tie up the Dunbine and blast it, but Shou is able to escape from them. Garalia arrives, not wanting to inform Todd of the Zelana‘s location so she can prove herself. One of the Zelana‘s crew members, Kapuran, is injured by the attacks. In the middle of fighting Drake’s soldiers, Todd comes in, surprised at the Dunbine’s sluggish movements. Todd has success until Marvel is able to shoot out the Drumlo‘s monitors. He and Garalia rendezvous with the other soldiers. Todd goes to see Bern and Mizeru on the Bull Beggar. Todd tells Bern the Drumlo isn’t powerful enough to face the Dunbine. On the Zelana, the crew look at the destroyed city below them. Keen is extremely upset that her father had a part in it.

Commentary

This was an extremely interesting episode, giving us something different than yet another rescue attempt of Riml. Our heroes head to the land of the Ferario, showing us additional interesting landscapes of Byston Well. The fact that the Mi Ferario’s domain is completely water explains why Silkie’s been kept in a watery prison at Laas Wau. Unfortunately for our heroes the Ferario don’t want to help them and send them back to Byston Well, but on the way we get to see Upper Earth for a moment. It seems like the Ferario definitely have the power to get Shou back to Upper Earth like he wants, but with Jacoba’s attitude it looks like it’ll be difficult for him to convince them to do that. This episode ends with the start of Drake’s conquest of Mi, which will be the content of the next few episodes.
