Eureka Seven Ep. 16: Opposite View

Summary

A few LFOs from the Gekko, including the Nirvash, travel around a giant mountain that has a cave entrance in it leading to an archeological dig site. Eureka remains silent in the Nirvash. Renton is amazed once they head inside the cave entrance and they signal back to the Gekko. Since the incident with the Coralian, the Gekko has been damaged and they have come here to hide away while they repair it. Holland looks out into the cave alone from the cockpit until Mischa joins him. He thinks some patrol units could find them here but she thinks he’s silent for other reasons. Woz tells him it’s going to be a lot of work. Matthieu and Happ say they are going to go out and look for supplies, taking Renton with them. In the ship’s dock, Renton and Eureka sit silent outside of the Nirvash. Renton asks Eureka if she was shocked that he was able to pilot the Nirvash better than her. Eureka remains silent and Renton keeps talking awkwardly about the subject. Happ and Matthieu come to get him. Heading out, the two of them talk about the supplies they hope to find. Stoner, Gidget and Moondoggie come with them, with Stoner taking a lot of photos of the abandoned area. Happ has everyone split up to look for things, leaving Renton on his own. Eureka’s kids run around on the ship playing while she falls to her knees as if in a daze. Eureka feels as if she can barely stay awake. Renton wanders around, hungry, and accidentally walks in as Moondoggie and Gidget embrace, although they don’t notice him. Suddenly lights start turning on as power in the area is restored. Now able to see, Renton is amazed by what he sees around him. He sees some odd objects on the top of the cave. On the bridge, Holland reacts to the power restoration and says they’d all go insane if digging was going on in here. Mischa says it’s as if they are already insane as they use LFOs dug up in places like this as weapons to kill other people. She asks him if he ever wonders why LFOs are shaped like humans. He says he always thinks about it while riding the waves and wonders if Adroc could have answered this question. The kids come on the bridge, saying Eureka is napping. Renton continues to wander around and sees a house located on a cliff nearby. Meanwhile elsewhere, Anemone freaks out, screaming about how much it her head hurts. She punches Dominic when he tries to settle her down, and then bites him on the neck too. He says things will be even worse if she resists her medication.

Matthieu drags around some tubing, asking if Happ if he’s found any food. He wonders where Renton is. Renton steps in the house and asks if anyone is around. The house has various modern amenities such as furniture and a flowing toilet, but Renton can’t find anyone inside. He picks up an apple sitting in a bowl and opens the fridge, finding a lot of food inside. We cut to later. Renton has consumed three entire pizzas and is cooking more food in the microwave. He says as there is some pizza left he should bring it back for the others. He tells himself he’ll be in trouble if he falls asleep here but does anyway. Matthieu and the others report back to Holland and Talho, who is disappointed at them for finding no food. They report that they have been unable to find Renton. Renton continues to sleep in the house. He dreams of people living there and senses as if someone is here. Waking up, he wonders if he’s in trouble and should apologize for eating their food without asking. He suddenly sees hundreds of sky fish fly before him. Meanwhile Dominic applies the medicine to Anemone and tells her to sleep. Renton for a moment can sense Anemone running in front of him. Only one skyfish remains in front of him and it too flies away, although Renton follows after it down a hallway. He sees it and others fly into a light filled room. Upon entering Renton sees things frozen in time, including Eureka kneeling in front of him. Eureka is actually back on the Gekko. Renton apologizes to the Eureka in front of him for what he was saying earlier. He admits he doesn’t understand anything about her despite how long they’ve known each other, but wants to know more. He finds it cruel for her to completely ignore what he is saying. She very slowly blinks her eyes in front of him. Renton wonders if this is a dream or if he’s in a Coralian again. Eureka stares, frightened at what is above them. The floor below them turns black and theEnd‘s face appears in the ceiling. The others continue to search for Renton. Meanwhile theEnd has completely come out of the ceiling and grabs for Eureka, then starts bleeding, with Anemone’s face appearing in the place of theEnd’s. On board her ship Anemone continues to grab her head in pain. Renton shouts out to stop and the Nirvash appears, pushing back against theEnd. Eureka grabs her head and screams. Later, Anemone has completely passed out and Dominic apologizes for putting her into such situations, telling her to sleep for now. Matthieu finds Renton, passed out on the ground. We cut to Renton having to carry a large bag of tools as the others return to the Gekko with him. Renton heads to the dock to where Eureka is. She says when she’s inside this cave she becomes very sleepy. Renton says he needs to apologize and she says she heard that all earlier.

Commentary

We rather unexpectedly get a very dark and strange episode here! The Gekko makes its way to a cave in order to make some needed repairs. Searching for supplies brings us through an old abandoned dig site where for much of the episode (until the lights turn on) it is very hard to see what they are heading through. Although it would have been nice to be able to see things better, this does contribute to a very dark atmosphere. Renton finds this strange, completely modern looking house and goes inside. Was the house even real? It seems odd that it would be here on its own. If people had settled here, wouldn’t there be others too? Some very strange things happen inside. Renton is extremely gluttonous in this episode, eating more than three whole pizzas on his own and completely disregarding the fact that the others are also hungry and looking for food. We are treated to a bizarre dream-like sequence where Renton sees a lot of skyfish flying through the house and a silent Eureka sitting in a room where both theEnd and the Nirvash appear. That Eureka was able to hear what he was saying despite being in the ship means at least some of the stuff that happened here was real. Eureka continues to be super down in the dumps throughout this episode, which I’ll admit is starting to get rather frustrating to me. Hopefully this results in something significant happening to her character as every scene with her is quite depressing.
