Eureka Seven Ep. 5: Vivid Bit

Summary

The Nirvash flies through the air with Eureka and Renton performing a test for Mischa. Renton struggles to keep up with Eureka’s piloting. Mischa wonders if the Nirvash’s strong performance is due to the Amita Drive speaking to it. Renton gets nauseated and throws up. Later, Renton despairs over recent screw ups he’s had. He is especially concerned with embarrassing himself in front of Eureka. Eureka shows up with her three kids, Maeter, Maurice and Linck. The kids taunt him, asking Eureka if she likes someone who doesn’t puke more than someone who does. Renton makes excuses and Maeter, says this is because he isn’t compatible with Eureka, causing him to panic even more and make more excuses. Renton starts talking to himself about his inexperience with romance, and his love for Eureka, with Talho overhearing him. Renton follows after her, begging her to not blab about it and says he’ll do whatever she says. Holland, Hilda and Happ talk about the crew’s budget and Talho asks a fancy piece of John Henry Silver jewelry, claiming she needs it for the next Ray=out. Holland says no and he’ll consider it when they have more money. For now the Nirvash requires more attention. Holland says he’s going to head out with Eureka on the Nirvash to get supplies, upsetting Talho. Talho tells Renton to come with her as she goes out and to hold her shopping bags. Hilda readies the typeR606 for takeoff, with Talho and Renton in the backseat. Renton asks if he can pilot instead of Hilda as he wants to get out of the seat with Talho. Meanwhile Matthieu struggles putting together a battle report for the Bell Forest battle for Ken-Goh. The typeR606 heads out, landing at a nearby town. Talho drags Renton along with her. Meanwhile in a busier part of town Holland and Eureka shop for supplies, but Eureka tells Holland the part they are looking at is dead. Renton sits, embarrassed as Talho shops for lingerie. Renton thinks to himself about how his heart is about to burst and how Talho’s face for a moment reminded him of his sister’s.

Holland and Eureka walk down the street and he says he can go alone next time; Eureka says she wants to come along as she wants to take proper care of the Nirvash. She says Renton understands too. Holland stops and separates from Eureka for a moment to buy something. Hilda meanwhile fights with other women in a supermarket. Talho sees the piece of jewelry she wants in a store window and rushes in to look at it, but is told the only copy they had available was just bought. Angry, she tells Renton they are going to buy something heavy so she can push his muscles to the limit. Later, Talho and Renton eat at the diner next to where the typeR606 was parked. Renton complains about how much she teases him. She says Holland and the other guys don’t care about her, but he said he’d do anything for her. She moves her head in close towards Renton as if she’s going to kiss him, then reveals it’s all a trick so she can pull his cheeks. She tells Renton he’s too young to know about love. Talho falls asleep, but is woken up as some LFOs with speakers blasting away from the park outside. Talho goes outside to complain about it. The men driving them recognize her from Ray=out causing her to confront them and smash their camera. Renton rushes up to them but gets hit by a golf club. One of the men grabs Talho, saying they’ll use her body to repay them for the camera. Renton gets into the TypeR606 as the other two men get into their LFOs and transform them into their humanoid form. Renton crashes into the diner as he takes off. Hearing of the commotion, Holland and Eureka also take off in the Nirvash. Renton soon finds himself pushed around. Holland grabs by the nose the guy holding onto Talho. Eureka tears open the cockpit of one of the LFOs. Talho kicks the guy in the crotch and is pushed out of the way by Holland seconds later as the LFO is about to step on her. Renton gets angry upon seeing it has stepped on a bag he brought with him. Holland runs up the LFO and opens up the cockpit, attacking the pilot inside. Renton wakes up later in the typeR606 with Talho holding him, telling him thank you. Renton realizes they are heading back to the Gekko. Talho makes the cockpit clear so Renton can see them traveling against the sunset. Hilda compliments Renton for not throwing up. Holland breathes a sigh of relief that the John Henry Silver jewelry he bought for Talho wasn’t messed up when his bag got stepped on. Matthieu hands Renton the battle report he put together. Renton finds out from Hilda that everyone already knows he likes Eureka. Renton heads after Talho, upset, but she tells him she didn’t tell anyone. He sees the John Henry Silver jewelry hanging around her neck. Mischa tells Renton a way to get on a woman’s good side is to get her a gift. Renton despairs, but Mischa tells him how he acts is more important than whether he gets her a gift, such as his efforts to protect Talho today. Eureka’s kids are surprised at something Eureka has told them about Renton. Renton thinks about how he’ll ask Holland about his first love when he gets bigger.

Commentary

After a pretty good start to the show, Eureka Seven hits us with a filler episode here fairly early on which is disappointing. Much of the episode is used to develop Renton’s relationship with Talho, which I didn’t view as all that necessary considering they spent some time on it in the previous episode. The visit to the town to purchase some supplies provides us a few laughs and some action, but nothing that felt all that necessary. While it is typically male characters that are portrayed as geeky collector types, we get that here with Talho, who obsesses over a special edition piece of jewelry. We get a little more time with Eureka’s kids here as well, who seem to take advantage of anything they can to embarrass Renton and get Eureka to not like him. Renton freaking out over things was at least pretty funny. Renton ends up forcing himself to do a lot of servitude for Talho all to keep his crush on Eureka a secret, when it is so obvious that everyone already knows about it!
