Fafner: Exodus Ep. 5: To a New World

0
Summary

Alarms go off as the Azazel type, which Alvis codenames “Walker,” appears with several other Festum. It opens a hole in the island shield and its comrades head inside. Sui launches by himself in order to lure the Festum in. Miwa doesn’t feel well and Emery tells her to build a wall in her heart to keep the Festum’s hatred out. Miwa wonders why they hate her but Emery assures her the Festum are trying to get rid of all who can talk to them. Sui’s luring is successful and the shields isolate the battlefield. Mimika, Reo, Rina, and Seri launch. Sui notices the Festum acting strange so he ignores Soushi’s orders and proposes his own plan. Sui, Reo, and Mimika charge in and skillfully destroy Festum along the way. Soushi and Sui realize the enemy knew they’d be trapped in the shield and one Festum deploys a pillar. It powers up another Festum which launches a black orb through several of the shields. The Alvis crew notes how fast the Festum have learned their strategy and realize if the attack breaks through all the shields the island is done for. Sui leads the assault and Soushi is surprised he’s the one taking orders now. The Festum fire off another shot and Mimika blocks it. Sui attacks the shooting Festum while Reo stabs his swords into the pillar. Susanoo loses an arm in the process and Seri jumps in with a follow up attack. The Festum fire off another shot which hits one of the secondary islands. Seri destroys the pillar and Rina and Mimika finish off the remaining Festum. Walker quietly disappears and the UN pilots are amazed. Soushi, impressed with Sui’s skills, figures he’ll be retiring too.

Mimika and Reo have their check up and Hiroto visits to congratulate them on a job well done. Hiroto and Seri run a news program where they interview Narain. They ask why he came to the island and he explains how they want to use the Esperanto to contact Altair using their Mir, Ashoka. They interview Emery next and she explains about her brother. The shoe she carries was his and she has it because he wanted to travel around the world. Miwa is next, and she says she wants to tell the Mir it’s good to get along with everyone. Fumihiko explains that they’re helping Narain because they have the same goal and hopefully it will lead to the end of the war. Rina butts in on Akira’s interview and while she says she’s against the plan, she adds she’ll protect the island so Akira can head out. Kyosuke, the expedition leader, brags about how prepared he is. Saki is watching the broadcast and gripes that Kyosuke made her do all that stuff. She wanted to go too, but Hiroto’s sister Mai tells her not to mind. Mitsugu is also staying behind and Mai’s father tells him to marry his daughter. Hiroto returns and announces he’s been selected for the expeditionary force. He says he wants to link the island with the outside world. Mai asks about Seri but Hiroto claims he was only interested in her when they were kids. Maya is also going on the mission and tells Kazuki he has to stay behind. Kazuki wonders if things will really work out and Maya says if there’s hope there’s a reason to fight. Miwa and Yumiko prepare for the trip, Yumiko vowing to protect her daughter. The Fafner unit is officially announced as being Maya, Akira, and Hiroto and they hold a party. Hiroto finds Seri by herself and asks if Tsubaki told her to be alone. She says she’ll join the others later and tells him to take care. Soushi tells Maya that if she judges the UN to be untrustworthy she should pull back. Canon tells Kazuki she’ll make sure he stays on the island and adds that it will probably be Maya’s last mission. Jonathan, Ai, and Billy arrive but the mood is awkward. Kazuki breaks the ice by shaking Jonathan’s hand and asking him to take care of the others. The next day the expeditionary force leaves. Kazuki, Rina, and Sui prepare for the Tanabata festival but Kazuki can’t decide on a wish. Kazuki and Soushi feel a sudden pain as Tsubaki leaves her pod.

Commentary

Things start off with an impressive battle, but it could have used some set up at the end of the previous episode. As is, it did feel extremely sudden. The new pilots strut their stuff and do exceptionally well in their first sortie. Sui in particular manages to out do Soushi on the tactical end and I think it’s safe to say the island is in good hands. Our extensive relationship web gets even more complicated with Reo being into Mimika who’s into Hiroto who’s into Seri. I love it. The expedition finally gets underway, but I’m not sure if this is the “Exodus” the title is referring to. Soushi’s narration once again spoils that things aren’t going to turn out so well, and Tsubaki’s emergence is just as ominous.
