One of the key innovations of the Earth Federation Forces’ Operation V mobile suit development project was the Core Block System. The system used a fighter with foldable wings as the mobile suit’s cockpit. In the event of catastrophic damage, the mobile suit’s torso could be ejected to allow the Core Fighter to escape and increase the pilot’s chances of surviving. Developed by aerospace manufacturer Hervic Company, the FF-X5 Prototype Core Fighter served as the cockpit of the RX-78-1 Prototype Gundam. The FF-X5 lacked armaments, although its successor, FF-X7 Core Fighter, was equipped with vulcan guns and missile launchers.
