Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! Ep. 2: Hostility Passing By/A Ruthless Lunch

0
Summary

Chidori makes every effort to get to the lunch lady on time to buy the croquette and custard breads before they run out. Inspired by her vigor, Sousuke fires a warning shot into the air and demands a French roll. The frightened students scatter and run over the lunch lady and the food stand. At the student council room, Atsunobu informs Chidori and Sousuke that the injured employee will need two weeks to recover and that the shops will no longer sell inside the school. He negotiated with the principal to allow the student council to buy and sell the bread until a better solution is found. At the principal’s room, PE teacher Kogure protests this decision. When he exits the room, Kogure finds Sousuke and Chidori, who are now in charge of the operation. Kogure threatens Sousuke that he will sabotage his operation but it falls on deaf ears. The next day, Kogure tries to plant cockroach legs in the bread but falls to Sousuke’s electric shock trap. Subsequent attempts also end in failure and eventually the principal catches him red handed. After two weeks have passed, Chidori and her friends who helped mention that they had fun and note that Kogure never made good on his threats. Kyoko says that he’s been taking frequent breaks and may go on sick leave, which Sousuke notes is a shame.

Shinji and Kyoko try to help Sousuke with his classic literature assignment, but Sousuke can’t understand any of it so Chidori lends him her notes on the condition that he returns them tomorrow when the assignment is due. Sousuke manages to finish by morning, but a distraction makes him forget to bring the notes to school. When Chidori finds out, she goes into a fit of rage and suplexes Sousuke. With less than an hour before the deadline, Chidori decides to go back to the safe house to get the notes. They hightail it out of the school and Chidori uses Sousuke to forcibly stop a taxi. Once at the apartment building, they run up the stairs and retrieve the notes, but when they get back down they find that the taxi has left because Sousuke threatened the driver with a gun. Sousuke breaks the lock on a bike in the parking lot and Chidori orders him to take a shortcut through the countryside. Sousuke struggles on an uphill road but manages to reach the top, just as patrol car orders them to stop. Instead of slowing down, Sousuke pedals like mad and tells a protesting Chidori that it would be the end if they get caught. The police officer gets riled up and the chase is on. Sousuke manages to evade the police by pedaling off a stairwell and jumping off the bike with Chidori. The patrol car crushes the bike and hits a metal fence, burning out its engine. Sousuke and Chidori make a mad rush to the station and barely manage to roll into the train through a series of choreographed acrobatics, only to discover that they boarded the limited express to Shinjuku. The naturally enraged Chidori tries to throw Sousuke off the train. Finally arriving late to school, Sousuke collapses from the fever he had since morning. Chidori drags him to the infirmary angrily asking why he didn’t tell her. At the infirmary, the find the literature teacher down with a cold and Chidori discovers that the assignment was a self-study. Sousuke reveals that he knew about this but figured it wasn’t an excuse to leave the notes at home and collapses again on a bed. Chidori yells that he should have told her earlier.

Commentary

Not much to say about this quick episode. Yet another of Sousuke’s fumbles lands him and Chidori in another bind they must fix and for some reason Kogure, like the head teacher, has some kind of personal vendetta against him. Not that it would help against someone with a history of setting deadly traps. It reminds me of the similar hate the vice principal and gym teacher share towards Eikichi in Great Teacher Onizuka. About the only point of interest in the second part is the female police officer who will have other appearances later on, otherwise this part was pretty unimpressive.
