Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid Ep. 6: Edge of Heaven

Summary

Sousuke barely makes it in time to take his history test, and Chidori is inwardly relieved. In Sydney, Tessa, Kalinin, Mao and Weber watch as Vincent gets violently interrogated. Eventually he gives in and tells them the only thing he knows: The name of the organization that bribed him is Amalgam. Kalinin thinks Amalgam is deliberately named like that. He and Tessa enter Borda’s office just as the latter is finishing a phone call from Amitt, who’s furious that the tactical division snatched Vincent without informing them. Borda tells Tessa that as a commander she should get used to seeing things like Vincent’s brutal interrogation. Kalinin informs Borda about Amalgam, and the latter says that they must reorganize their priorities starting with the reduction of resources used to watch over Chidori. Tessa tries to object to pulling Sousuke off of guard duty but she soon begrudgingly consents to Borda’s decision. On the way home from school, Chidori, Kyoko and Sousuke are chatting and Kyoko points out that Sousuke needs a haircut. Sousuke reveals that he cuts hair using a knife instead of going to a barbershop, and Kyoko suggest that Chidori take him to a salon for a change. Things go normally for a bit until Sousuke notices Wraith standing outside and his instincts soon takes over when the hair dresser starts cutting his hair. He pulls out his pistol and Chidori has no choice but to smack him again.

Sousuke apologizes again for messing up and reiterates his mission to protect Chidori. Chidori realized that it’s been half a year since Sousuke transferred into school and offers to cut his hair at her place even though she never tried that before. As Chidori gently goes on with the task, she asks Sousuke if he got hurt during the last mission and why he’s been very nervous lately. Sousuke assures her that she’s not being targeted again and that another agent is watching over her while he’s gone. Chidori says that she only trusts Sousuke with protecting her. When she finishes, Chidori discovers that Sousuke has fallen asleep. A moment of awkwardness ensues before she splashes him with water. At Amalgam’s secret arm slave hangar, the twins steal a mass produced Codarl and cause chaos before running away. Gates finds out and contacts the twins asking where they’re going. Yu Fan tells them that they’re going to kill the children for their master. Sousuke has dinner at Chidori and she asks if he had a safe weapon she could use. He unloads an abnormal pile of sprays, handcuffs and flashlights on the table, and eventually Chidori settles for a stun gun. She asks if the stun gun might kill someone, and Sousuke tells her not to hesitate to defend herself from threats. Sousuke thanks Chidori for everything and leaves, and the latter mutters to herself that maybe she’ll pick his clothes next time. Sousuke returns to the safe house and receives and e-mail ordering him abort the protection mission and return immediately. Wraith will take over guard duty and Sousuke is forbidden from ever making contact with Chidori again. Finding himself consumed by an unfamiliar rage, Sousuke smashes the laptop screen.

Commentary

Slowing down from the action a bit, it’s time for some exposition and character development. I find it humorous that Vincent was apparently taking the beatings quite well but spills his guts the second they start snapping his fingers, though now we finally know the name of Gates’ and potentially Gaulon’s employer. Sousuke and Chidori bond grows stronger, but I have to wonder if it couldn’t be done with anything other than the haircut scene. Sousuke’s hair doesn’t look any different from before, even from way back in the early seasons. Too bad that all means squat now that Sousuke is pulled off the mission for good. We’ve seen that Gates is crazy enough as it is, but now we find out that apparently he has a bunch of creepy fetishes among other things.
