Full Metal Panic! Ep. 23: Field of Giants

0
Summary

The Bunker Hill’s crew work to put out the fires while Jenkin still holds Kalinin at gunpoint. Jenkin tells Kalinin that he can’t leave the ship, and Kalinin requests a phone. Jenkin asks if he’s going to call a lawyer, and Kalinin says that they must prevent a confrontation between America and Mithril. The Pasadena is still tracking the Tuatha de Danaan and Takenaka informs Saylor that they’re ready to fire at any time. Takenaka asks Saylor if he’s really going to go through with this. Saylor tells him to remember Pearl Harbor and orders a torpedo to be fired. The Tuatha de Danaan’s AI detects the torpedo and Tessa begs Gaulon to give her control of the ship. Gaulon refuses and Tessa asks him if he’s trying to commit suicide. Gaulon remarks that the Tuatha de Danaan’s destruction will be a very expensive suicide and laughs. Tessa realizes in horror that he’s been toying with them from the start. Gaulon orders the AI to submerge to a depth of 1500. The AI warns him that that exceeds the Tuatha de Danaan’s practical depth limit and Gaulon orders it anyway. Weber tells Guen that they shouldn’t be wasting their time like this, and Guen offers him an opportunity to join them. Weber refuses and Guen reminds him that they’re mercenaries who work for money, not heroes. Weber says that he’ll make money by disposing of him and getting a bonus from Tessa then sell pictures of her in a swimsuit. Sousuke and Chidori reach the Lady Chapel and Weber douses Guen with a fire extinguisher. Sousuke and Chidori enter the room and find the Transfer & Response Omni Sphere system. Chidori remarks that it’s older than the Arbalest’s version and not connected to a Lambda Driver. It acts as the ship’s regulator instead. She lies inside a capsule and presses a button to close it over her. Tessa talks to Sousuke through Chidori and asks him to come save her. Weber tackles Guen and the latter gets up brandishing a knife. He cuts Weber twice and the latter kicks him the crotch. Guen pulls out his gun and is about to shoot when a knife hits him in the neck. Guen turns around to look for the attacker and gets another knife in the chest. Weber slams the fire extinguisher over Guen’s head and the latter falls down the stairs, smashing his head against a bulkhead handle. A dazed Mao approaches and tells Weber his close combat skills are terrible. She identifies Guen’s body and asks what is going on. Weber asks her what she’s doing her and she replies that she woke up in the infirmary when the alarm sounded. She couldn’t go to the hangar with just her underwear on and wandered around until she stumbled into the fight. Still under the effect of the sedatives, Mao collapses from exhaustion and Weber curses himself for not having a camera. The increased pressure causes several pipes to explode all over the Tuatha de Danaan. Gaulon orders a full rotation and chaff dispersal. Tessa is silently relaying instructions to Chidori and eventually she regains control of the AI. She quickly orders the AI to fire decoys and perform an emergency surface. The shockwaves from torpedo impact with the decoys throws Tessa against the wall.

Saylor can’t believe the Tuatha de Danaan dodges the torpedo and notes that the captain must be incredibly reckless. Gaulon asks Tessa how she regained control and Tessa tells him that the Tuatha de Danaan didn’t trust him. She restores everything to normal and boasts that the Tuatha de Danaan is her ship. Gaulon is about to shoot her when Sousuke bursts in and shoots him in the shoulder. Sousuke tells Gaulon to surrender, but the latter still has his gun trained on Tessa. Tessa orders Sousuke to shoot and the entire ship is rocked by the emergency surfacing. Sousuke gets up and notices that Gaulon has escaped and Tessa is unconscious. The dive officer tells Sousuke to uncuff them quickly because another torpedo is coming. They can’t avoid it in time and brace for impact. Chidori speaks to Sousuke through Tessa and tells him not to worry. The torpedo passes harmlessly under the Tuatha de Danaan. Sousuke tells the crew to take care of Tessa and runs after Gaulon. The dive officer realizes that the torpedo’s safety device activated because there are American vessels nearby. The torpedo won’t rise to surface level to avoid accidentally hitting allies. Sousuke looks for Gaulon and runs into a hologram of Chidori. Saylor can’t believe the Tuatha de Danaan dodged the second shot and orders the safety devices on the other torpedoes to be disabled. Chidori tells Sousuke that despite being cornered, Gaulon is thrilled at the odds and only thinks of evening them out. Sousuke realizes that Gaulon’s heading for the Venom. The hangar crew is cleaning up the mess caused by the surfacing and treating the wounded. Mardukas contacts the bridge and asks what is going on. The dive officer explains the situation and Mardukas spots Gaulon out of the corner of his eye. Gaulon climbs up the Venom and Mardukas orders everyone to stop him but Gaulon opens fire with his machine gun, scaring the crew away. Gaulon activates the Venom and Mardukas orders everyone to evacuate. Gaulon smashes a nearby crate and pulls a shot cannon from it. He’s about to shoot Mardukas when everyone sees the Arbalest activate and get up. Sousuke is shaking in fear, remembering the deaths of the Indian Ocean unit and Mao’s injury. When Gaulon destroys a jet to get his attention, Sousuke yells that he’s had enough. He picks up a monomolecular cutter from a parked M9 and Gaulon grabs one, too. Sousuke yells that he’ll kill Gaulon and their knives clash.

Commentary

As Chidori already mentioned, Gaulon’s been reduced to a desperate raving lunatic now that he’s lost everything, and now it’s down to a final showdown between him and Sousuke. Danigan and Guen received fitting gruesome deaths, and I kinda felt sorry for the crew member who got shot in the butt. What I couldn’t figure out was Saylor’s Pearl Harbor line. Was he implying that the Tuatha de Danaan was a Japanese vessel or was he just raving? This was a good episode with lots of tense situations. Let’s hope the last episode maintains that quality.
