The GN-0000 00 Gundam was a new mobile suit created by Celestial Being following its defeat in 2308. Its main characteristic was the Twin Drive System, a design unlocked at the same time as Trans-Am. In the system, two GN Drives were synchronized, causing their GN particle output to be squared rather than doubled. The five GN Drives had slight differences, and using incompatible drives resulted in unstable synchronization. After testing multiple configurations, it was determined that the GN Drives used in the GN-000 0 Gundam and GN-001 Gundam Exia provided the best synchronization rate. However, the system was still unstable and was force started by Setsuna F. Seiei in 2312 through the use of Trans-Am. This instability caused the 00 Gundam to become disabled when attempting to use Trans-Am. The 00 Gundam’s body had difficulty handling the amount of GN particles produced by the Twin Drive Systems, but these issues were corrected through docking with the GNR-010 0 Raiser to form the GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser.
As a newer suit, the 00 Gundam was designed with Trans-Am in mind and did not suffer a drastic performance drop like earlier generations of Gundams. The suit’s clavicle antennae were miniaturized and were now mounted on the head, while the antennae on the chest were for support. The GN Drives were a fusion of the third generation’s cone type design with the three thruster design of the second generation, and had different functions when they were in different positions. When facing the sides, they were in the standard position. When they faced the back, they were used for propulsion purposes. When they were facing forward, they could release large amount of particles to produce a GN Field effect. The suit’s GN Drives were more compact than earlier generations as the systems for controlling the core unit had been miniaturized. This seemed to be linked to feedback from studying the GN Drive Tau.
The 00 Gundam was designed specifically for Setsuna’s use. Although he went missing after the battle with the UN forces, his teammates in Celestial Being believed that he would safety rejoin them as he would somehow get news about the organization. The 00 Gundam was developed as a general purpose/versatile machine equipped with close combat weaponry. Operational data of the Gundam Exia was used in designing the 00 Gundam. The pair of GN Sword II had three different modes: rifle mode, sword mode and beam saber Mode. The GN Beam Saber could function as a GN Beam Dagger by adjusting the output. The GN Shields were made of E-Carbon and had a GN field effect added to their surface; they could be used as weapons due to their sharp tip. Although Aeolia Schenberg only completed the theory behind the Twin Drive System and did not built the physical system, he had foreseen to a certain degree the phenomenon/effect caused by the system when it became operational. What Aeolia truly wanted from the system was not its performance as a mobile weapon engine unit; rather he hoped that it could evolve human beings into Innovators.
