The GNX-U02X Masurao was an experimental unit developed by former Union engineers as a testbed for the Earth Sphere Federation’s next mainstay mobile suit to replace the GN-X series and the GNX-704T Ahead. Its development was initially based on the Ahead, but the design was restarted and focused instead on the SVMS-01 Union Flag at the request of Mr. Bushido (aka Graham Aker). In reflecting its Union origins, the head of Daryl Dodge’s SVMS-01O Over Flag was used in building the Masurao’s head. The “02” in its model number indicated that the Masurao was a successor to Aker’s SVMS-01X Union Flag Custom II. Additional references to the Union included the suit’s rear cover armor, which was modeled after the Union’s sign, as well as the sword guards of the GN Beam Sabers. The rear cover armor could also mount a GN Condenser. The suit’s head cable had the same energy supplying function as the GNX-704T/AC Ahead Sakigake‘s cable. One of the Masurao’s new features was a Trans-Am System developed independently of the Innovators/Innovades by engineer Billy Katagiri, based on notes left behind by the late Professor Ralph Eifman.

The suit’s head-mounted antennae (the “horns”) and waist-mounted thrusters inherited the technology of the GN-X’s X-shaped clavicle antennae (aka GN particle generators). As such, the head antennae had excellent GN particle control capability and could shape the particles into a ring and fire it at enemy units. This beam chakram was a prototype weapon used by Masurao and the improved GNX-Y901TW Susanowo. This inherited technology also helped to stabilize the suit during aerial close combat and was present in all suits derived from the Masurao. The Masurao’s main armaments were the GN Long Beam Saber “Howard” and GN Short Beam Saber “Daryl,” both named for Aker’s fallen wingmen. Both sabers were stored on the underside of the waist-mounted thrusters. Each saber mounted two thrusters at the rear and would automatically fly toward the hands when used. The suit had no shield as both of its hands were for wielding the sabers. In place of a shield, the suit had small GN Field generators in the protrusions on the shoulders and elbows. These protrusions also functioned as sub-thrusters, improving the suit’s aerial posture control capability. Mr. Bushido used the Masurao in several battles against Celestial Being before switching to the upgraded Susanowo.
