Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is the first Gundam OVA series and was released in Japan in 1989 to coincide with the franchise’s 10th anniversary. Debuting one year after Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, it was the first of many side stories to revisit the One Year War setting of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. The OVA was directed by Fumihiko Takayama with character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto, mechanical designs by Yutaka Izubuchi and a score by Tetsuro Kashibuchi. Set in late UC 0079, the series focuses on Alfred Izuruha, a young boy living in the neutral Side 6 colony cluster. Alfred befriends a rookie Zeon soldier named Bernie Wiseman, and the two have dramatic impacts on each other’s lives as the Zeon carry out a mission to find a new Gundam that is being secretly tested in the colony. The series was originally released on home video in North America by Bandai Entertainment, but it has since been re-released by Nozomi Entertainment.
