Gundam 00 Season 2 Ep. 23: Flower of Life

0
Summary

Regene laughs because he believes that he’s killed Ribbons, so he’s shocked to hear Ribbons behind him. Ribbons tells Regene that his consciousness is linked directly to Veda, making a body nothing more than a vessel. He reminds Regene how superior he is, and when Regene tries to shoot him again, he’s instead shot by Ali. Ali mentions that A-LAWS is losing, so he thinks it’s time for him to join the battle. Kati gives the coup forces orders to continue attacking the A-LAWS fleet. Patrick dodges attacks from Aheads, and Setsuna destroys an Ahead as he flies by. A Baikal opens fire on the 00 Raiser, but Setsuna destroys it with a single blast. Feldt reports that the A-LAWS fleet is scattering, so Sumeragi tells Ian to concentrate the Ptolemaios 2‘s attacks on the center of the fleet. Tieria destroys a Baikal, and Kati sends a message for the Gundams to defend their mothership. She then calls Sumeragi and explains that they’re only working with Celestial Being to overthrow A-LAWS. Setsuna then broadcasts a fleet-wide message warning of an incoming attack. A large beam is then fired from nowhere, destroying many A-LAWS and several coup ships. Marina wonders what that light was, and Shirin thinks about Klaus. On the Innovator ship Celestial Being, GN Drive Taus are replaced to prepare for the second shot. The remaining Baikals begin to retreat and the Celestial Being drops its optical camouflage. Ribbons says that the colony ship is humanity’s last hope, conceived 200 years ago by Aeolia. Sumeragi sends a message to the coup ships that they intend to attack the Celestial Being to seize control of Veda. The Ptolemaios 2 and the Gundams then head for the ship, and Sumeragi says they’ll change the world and atone for their sins for the sake of the future.

The Celestial Being begins heavy bombardment, so the Cherudim Gundam GNHW/R goes into Trans-Am to snipe the gun turrets. The large cannon fires a second shot, but Lasse maneuvers the ship out of the way. Lockon snipes more gun turrets, but his shield bits are all destroyed, so Tieria shields him with a GN field. The Seravee Gundam GNHW/B fires a blast at the gun turrets and is joined by a missile attack from the Archer Arios. Hiling asks for permission to launch, but Ribbons tells her that the Gaga squadron is enough to deal with Celestial Being, so he’s saving her and Revive for later. Suddenly, waves of Gagas piloted by the Bring and Divine clones launch and activate Trans-Am. The Gagas rush in for suicide attacks against the Ptolemaios 2, and the Gundams attempt to hold them off. Some of the Gagas break past the ship’s GN field and cause damage. The transport ship is destroyed, and the Ptolemaios 2 continues its counterattack. Feldt continues to search for an invasion path, and Sumeragi is surprised when the Katharon and coup ships join the battle. A Gaga rushes toward Kati’s ship, but Patrick destroys it. Several Gagas slam into Patrick, and he tells Kati that he loves her before his GN-XIII explodes. Feldt finds the right path, and the Ptolemaios 2 crash lands into one of the Celestial Being‘s hangars. Allelujah and Soma defend the ship, while Lasse prepares to launch in the 0 Gundam. A swarm of automatons and Gagas then attack the Celestial Being, and Setsuna comes under attack from Louise’s Regnant. Lockon smashes his way into the ship’s interior and finds Ali’s Arche Gundam waiting for him. Ali deploys his fangs, so Lockon responds with his new rifle bits. Allelujah, Soma and Lasse fight off the attacking Gagas, but Lasse wishes he could use Trans-Am. Tieria then comes under attack from Revive and Hiling, who are both using Trans-Am. Tieria activates Trans-Am, but Hiling cuts off the Seravee Gundam’s arms, and it crashes on the asteroid surface of the Celestial Being. Ali knocks away Lockon’s sniper rifle and declares that melee battles are the best. Lockon blocks with his beam pistols, and Ali cuts off part of the Cherudim Gundam’s right leg. Allelujah wants to dock with Soma, but a Gaga slams into the GN Archer. Automatons invade the Ptolemaios 2, and Sumeragi is surprised to encounter Billy and some automatons in a corridor. Andrei tries to attack the 00 Raiser and is quickly disabled. Louise deploys her fangs, but Setsuna easily destroys them. Louise blames the Gundams for ruining her life, and Saji tells her a future won through fighting is worthless, because they have to advance by understanding each other. Revive breaks off to back up Louise, and Hiling notices that Tieria has abandoned the Seravee Gundam. Inside Veda’s control room, Ribbons wonders if humanity will be destroyed or reborn, but Tieria enters the room and tells Ribbons he won’t be the one to decide that.

Commentary

As the final battle continues, we see that A-LAWS has been pretty much completely removed as a threat, although that was completely Ribbons’ doing. Unfortunately for Regene, his victory over Ribbons is short-lived and he gets killed by Ali. Since Ribbons had tons of clones of Bring and Divine, you’d think Regene would expect that Ribbons might have a body double, but apparently he didn’t think that far ahead. Those clones get put to a rather strange use as pilots for a bunch of suicide mobile suits, which I guess further proves that Ribbons views the Innovators as nothing more than tools for him to use. After its surprise return last episode, it’s nice to see the 0 Gundam in action and for Lasse to have a brief moment as a Gundam Meister. Patrick declares his love for Kati and is seemingly killed again, but I don’t buy it. In the first season, he was assumed dead and was saved by the fact that the GN-X cockpit was in the crotch. The same is true for the GN-XIII, so I expect him to survive again in the same way. As this is the final battle, we’re starting to see some duels get set up, including Setsuna and Saji against Louise, as well as Lockon versus Ali. There’s also a personal confrontation between Billy and Sumeragi, which should settle things between them. Finally, given how smug and supremely arrogant Ribbons is, it’s nice to see him be totally shocked when Tieria enters Veda’s control room.
