Gundam 00 Season 2 Ep. 24: Beyond

0
Summary

Louise responds to Saji by telling him that Celestial Being took away her future. She then transforms the Regnant and fires a volley of GN missiles at the 00 Raiser. Andrei also attacks and claims that Saji is clouding Louise’s mind, but Setsuna easily knocks his Ahead away. Louise then grapples onto the 00 Raiser with her plasma leaders and fires her cannon at it. She gets the 00 Raiser into a bear hug, and Saji fires missiles at several approaching Gagas, but one of them manages to get through. Tieria holds Ribbons at gunpoint and declares that they are Innovades, artificial life forms meant to usher in the existence of real Innovators. Ribbons then declares that he’s evolved past an Innovade and has become the equivalent of an Innovator, but Tieria calls that a fantasy. On the Ptolemaios 2, Billy calls off the automatons and tells Sumeragi to drop her gun and surrender. She asks him what he’s doing, and he tells her he’s fighting to create permanent peace. She responds that that means being slaves to the Innovators, but Billy thinks it’s logical to follow superior beings. Sumeragi disagrees and believes the future is meaningless unless they make it themselves. The Arche Gundam dodges the shots from the Cherudim Gundam‘s beam pistols and knocks it away. Outside, the Arios Gundam keeps firing at the Gagas, but one breaks past and slams into the GN Archer. At the same time, the 0 Gundam runs out of GN particles and Lasse spits up some blood. Saji wakes up and sees that Setsuna has pulled Louise out of the Regnant. Setsuna tells him to escape and get Louise to safety as Hiling and Revive attack. Setsuna dodges their attacks, and Tieria is shot multiple times by Ribbons, including in the head. Louise wakes up in Saji’s arms and immediately begins to strangle him. She yells at him to die, but when she sees the ring on his necklace, she begins to cry out in pain and stops. Setsuna fights off both Hiling’s Garazzo and Revive’s Gadessa, and Revive wonders if this is what it’s like to fight a true Innovator. They activate a Trans-Am attack, and Setsuna does the same, which causes him to hear the voices of Saji and Louise. Louise stops screaming and passes out, and Saji notices that she’s wearing his ring on her artificial hand. With the increased amount of GN particles, Setsuna begins to hear the voices of the other Meisters and the Ptolemaios 2 crew. At the same time, the Arios Gundam is damaged and Lockon is forced into a corner by Ali. Setsuna declares he won’t let everyone’s lives fade away and activates the Trans-Am Burst mode, which unleashes an enormous flood of GN particles in the surrounding space. Revive believes they could fight the same way if they had the 00 Raiser, and the voice of Regene tells him that the quantum brain waves of a real Innovator linked with the Twin Drive System can expand the consciousness of humans. Ali hears voices, and Lockon pushes him away. Allelujah hears the voice of Hallelujah and activates Trans-Am to fight the Gagas. Billy hears Sumeragi’s voice in his head apologizing for using him, and he eventually drops his gun and hugs her. Marie wakes up and hears Andrei’s voice. She tells him she can’t forgive him, but adds that Sergei would be unhappy if she hated him. He calls Sergei a traitor, but Marie tells him he’s wrong and that they should’ve understood each other. Lasse finds that his pain is gone, so he heads for the bridge. Saji cries as he holds Louise, and she wakes up. Louise says her pain is vanishing and asks what the light is, so Saji answers that it’s the light from Setsuna’s heart.

Setsuna blasts his way inside the Celestial Being and goes on foot to find Veda. Ribbons wonders why his quantum brain waves were disrupted and is shocked to hear Regene’s voice. Ribbons’ link to Veda is cut, and Regene tells him he won’t have his way. Tieria’s dead eyes begin to glow, and the Seraphim Gundam then activates and undocks from the Seravee Gundam. The Seraphim Gundam then activates the Trial system, which disables the Gagas, Gadessa and Garazzo. The automatons attacking Sumeragi and Billy cease fire, and Allelujah rushes over to the GN Archer’s cockpit to rescue Marie, who tells him she’s ok. Lockon blasts away more of the Arche Gundam, forcing Ali to escape on foot. Lockon gives chase and shoots Ali in the shoulder, telling him to drop his gun. Lockon finally faces the man who killed his entire family, but just then he hears Anew’s voice telling him that they understood each other. Lockon begins to ease off the trigger, and Ali tries to reach for his gun, but Lockon shoots him in the head and kills him. He says that because of Anew, he believes a world where people understand each other can exist. He doesn’t care if the world disagrees with him, so he’ll fight on as a Gundam Meister. Setsuna enters Veda’s control room and vows to avenge Tieria when he sees his body. However, Tieria’s voice tells Setsuna that his consciousness is now linked directly with Veda. Because of that, he now knows everything and will tell Setsuna what Aeolia’s plans are. Later, Setsuna returns to the 00 Raiser and tells the Ptolemaios 2 he’ll return in an hour. He then recalls what Tieria told him, which was that the armed interventions were part of unifying the world and starting to unify the consciousness of humanity. Tieria said humans couldn’t advance into deep space because they still held the sparks of conflict. Once that’s changed, they’ll be prepared for the dialogues to come with aliens. The Seraphim Gundam is suddenly hit by a surprise attack, and Sumeragi wonders what enemy could still be moving even with the Trial system in use. Billy explains that it has to be Ribbons, the Innovator who surpasses Innovators. Setsuna turns and finds Ribbons in his Reborns Gundam. Ribbons tells Setsuna he’d like some gratitude since he gave Setsuna the power he now has.

Commentary

The penultimate episode brings several issues and sets the stage for the final battle. The storyline of Saji and Louise is finally resolved, although we’re left to think that she’s dead for a few minutes, until Setsuna releases his flood of purified GN particles. Unlike guys in past Gundam shows who are involved with psychotic girls, Saji is lucky enough to get a happy ending. Lockon is able to recover from what looked to be a losing battle in the previous episode and is able to beat Ali. He’s also able to put aside his hatred for Ali killing his family, but when Ali tries to take advantage of that, Lockon finally finishes him off. It’s kind of fitting that he was the one to kill Ali, since Ali had caused his family so much grief. Something that didn’t make sense is the sudden reversal of how Ribbons gets the gun away from Tieria and shoots him. Also, for some reason, the staff of this show really seems to like head shots recently, since we’ve now had Hong Long, Ribbons, Tieria and Ali get hit with them. Thankfully, Tieria is able to survive and get inside Veda with some help from Regene. Sumeragi and Billy resolve their issues, but I still don’t see why Billy would cast his lot so heavily with the Innovators just because he felt personally betrayed. Marie speaks to Andrei, but he still comes across as a weasel using multiple excuses to justify killing Sergei. Although Setsuna’s GN flood gave everyone the opportunity to solve their problems, they still had to make the attempt themselves. Even then, obviously Ribbons, Ali, Revive and Hiling didn’t listen. With all these issues out of the way, the path is cleared for the final boss battle between Setsuna and Ribbons.
