Gundam Build Divers Ep. 2: Chaotic Ogre

0
Summary

Riku and Yukio talk at school about their first GBN experience and how awful Do-Ji was. As they leave school, Yukio explains that he’ll be logging in without his Gunpla because he’s customizing it. Momoka stops them in the hall and declares that they’ll join the soccer club, but they distract her and run away. Yukio asks Riku why he didn’t use Trans-Am during the battle, and Riku explains that the ability to use Trans-Am depends on how well the Gunpla is constructed, so he didn’t want to take a risk on that yet. The two head for The Gundam Base, unaware that Momoka is following them. Inside the GBN lobby, they run into the mysterious girl, who gives her name as Sarah. Yukio suggests that they all friend each other so they can see their online statuses. Magee greets them and is glad to see that Sarah is OK. At McDaniel Hamburgers, Magee suggests that they go on a collect mission for beginners that uses the entire map. The mission’s goal: collect a fireweed flower from a large field. Riku asks how he’s support to transport Yukio and Sarah, and they end up riding out in the open in the Gundam 00 Diver’s hands. Yukio wants to go faster, so Riku speeds up and accidentally drops him and Sarah in the process. Riku manages to catch them, and they fly past recreations of the Sanc Kingdom, Lacroa and Moralia. Riku asks why the world map is so large, and Yukio explains that it’s for team force battles. Winning force battles earns Force Points and bonuses like weapon data, costumes and furniture. Riku watches the end of a force battle and wants to start a force, but Yukio notes that he’ll need to increase his rank. Riku lands in a forest area and tests the Trans-Am System, but Sarah has a negative reaction and tells Riku that his Gunpla is suffering. He gets warning messages and turns off the system. Sarah asks Riku not to use Trans-Am, and he agrees. The three then walk to the flower field, which Yukio explains is a reference to Shahkti’s flowers in Victory Gundam. The group takes a photo together and plucks a flower to complete the mission. As they walk through the forest, they encounter Do-Ji and another player. Momoka walks around The Gundam Base and wonders where Riku and Yukio went.

“Hellfire” Ogre tells his brother Do-Ji that he didn’t have to come along, and Do-Ji panics when he sees Riku and Yukio. Yukio accuses Do-Ji of tricking them, but Do-Ji says it’s all a lie. Ogre asks if they’re the ones who called him out, but they don’t know what he’s talking about. A three player team in ZAFT uniforms shows up because they want revenge for being beaten by Ogre in a force battle. Ogre then summons his Ogre GN-X, and the ZAFT team calls for their Dom Test Types. Ogre attacks and slices off a Dom’s arm, and Riku summons the Gundam 00 Diver to protect Yukio and Sarah. One of the Doms attacks Riku, and Ogre knocks Riku away, telling him to stay out of the battle. Ogre then destroys one of the Doms, and the force leader activates Break Decal to fight back. Sarah feels sickened, and one of the Doms attacks Riku again. The two Doms fire simultaneously at Riku, but he is able to dodge, which causes one Dom to be destroyed by friendly fire. The remaining Dom tries to fight Ogre, but both Riku and Ogre slice it apart. Ogre then attacks Riku and accuses him of being no beginner. Riku explains that they have no reason to fight, and Ogre counters that the whole point of Gunpla Battle is to fight and become stronger. Ogre activates Trans-Am and launches a fierce attack, so Riku breaks his promise and uses Trans-Am himself. He’s able to dodge Ogre’s attacks and fight back, but his Gunpla overloads and is damaged. Ogre moves in for the final blow, but Sarah stands in front of Riku and blocks him. Ogre and Do-Ji then leave, and Yukio tells Sarah that she scared him by jumping out like that. Back at the hangar, Magee explains that Ogre is an up-and-coming fighter who wants to become the champion. Riku thinks to himself that he was utterly defeated. He thanks Sarah for saving him and apologizes for breaking his promise. He promises not to use Trans-Am again until he improves his skills. After logging off GBN, Riku and Yukio are surprised to see Nanami dressing up Momoka in different Gundam costumes.

Commentary

The second episode brings back the mysterious girl, who is named Sarah and has a connection to Gunpla that allows her to feel things about them. She also is basically a blank in her GBN profile, so I’m leaning more toward her being a sentient AI out loose in the world. This episode has quite a few suit, location and costume cameos, but the one I find most amusing is the reference to Zeta Gundam’s McDaniel Hamburgers. Yukio also shows off his Gundam nerd knowledge by talking about obscure lore like Shahkti’s flowers. The battle itself was nothing particularly special, and so far Ogre seems to be another one of these generic characters obsessed with strengths. I’m sure Riku will cross paths with him again and defeat him once he masters Trans-Am.
