Gundam Build Divers Ep. 20: The Truth

0
Summary

The Game Master is shown an analysis regarding the bug issue. At the Build Divers Force Nest, the team has a party to welcome Nanami into their force. Yukki asks Nanami about her Gunpla, and she says she has something in mind for herself and Sarah and wants Koichi’s help. She also says she has another favor to ask from everyone: a makeover to customize the room they gave her in the nest. She’s set up a list of items for everyone to win in missions, and Riku thinks it’ll make good practice before the Matching Battle, a one-day tournament. The battles are individual instead of Force-based, and Riku explains that they all signed up to test their skills before the Raid Battle. The Game Master meets virtually with Kyoya to discuss the bug issue. He shows them the analysis of the bugs during the Nadeshiko-athlon and explains that it wasn’t due to Break Decals, but they don’t know the cause yet. The Game Master adds by examining the frequency of bug outbreaks and player locations, they believe the bugs are being caused by one of the race participants. In response, the administration is sending GBN-Guard Frames to watch over all the female players who were in the race. Meanwhile, the Build Divers conduct multiple missions to win prizes for Nanami. The Build Divers have a nighttime picnic and notice a GBN-Guard Frame watching them. GBN-Guard Frames are deployed across GBN to scan the participants of the Nadeshiko-athlon. The GBN-Guard Frame scans the female Build Divers members and determines that Sarah is unidentified. It then moves towards her, and Riku is unable to summon the 00 Sky due to them being in a Safety Area. Sarah trips while running away, and a barrier appears around her when the GBN-Guard Frame tries to grab her. Purple lightning, tornadoes and other bugs then appear throughout GBN. Sarah gets up to run away, and the yellow bird appears and flaps its wings, destroying the GBN-Guard Frame. The bird introduces itself as Ms. Tori, the creator of GBN’s main systems.

Ms. Tori leads the Build Divers to her private sanctuary so they can talk without interference from the administration. Riku asks what she wants with them, and she answers that it’s to discuss something important. She tells them the storm was caused by a bug, which has been happening frequently. She states that Sarah is the cause of the bugs because she’s an electronic lifeform born within GBN. She adds that GBN transmits data when scanning Gunpla and conducting battles, and in each case excess data was being created. Over time, the excess data, which she describes as players’ feelings for Gunpla, gathered together and created Sarah. She says that she only recently confirmed Sarah’s existence and has been following her. She thinks that Sarah is growing beyond her expectations due to her interactions with the Build Divers. However, Sarah’s growth coincides with the appearance of the bugs, which is putting a strain on the system. The system was able to absorb those bugs, but that all changed when Sarah’s powers were fully unleashed with the wings of light during the Break Decal incident. This spread pieces of Sarah throughout all of GBN, putting a greater strain on all of GBN. As Sarah continues to grow, it will create more bugs and eventually destroy GBN. The administration now knows about Sarah, so they will create a patch that eliminates the bugs, destroying Sarah in the process. Riku can’t believe it, so Ms. Tori asks Sarah basic personal questions like where she was born, her age and what her real name is. Sarah says she wants to apologize because she doesn’t know what their “real world” is, but she was scared they would think she was weird for saying so. Ms. Tori says she wants to help Sarah and ran many simulations, but nothing worked. Koichi asks why she’s telling them this, and she answers that she has hopes they can do something. The Game Master tells Kyoya that Sarah has been classified as an EL-Diver and that the strain she’s putting on the system surpasses the threat of the Break Decals. As a result, they’re creating a patch to eliminate her. At the Force Nest, Sarah asks to be left alone. Koichi wonders what they can do, and Riku vows that he won’t let the administration get Sarah. Koichi thinks back to what Ms. Tori said and gets an idea. Magee calls the Force Nest and tells everyone that he saw Sarah in the lobby and she looked depressed. Riku runs into her room and finds a goodbye note. He then goes outside and finds the Game Master and other staff there. The Game Master scans the goodbye note and tells the staff that Sarah is on the run. The Game Master announces to all of GBN that Sarah is the cause of the bugs and will be patched out. He asks that any sightings of her be reported to the administration immediately.

Commentary

This episode, as its name implies, finally reveals “the truth” about Sarah that has been obvious all along. It was pretty clear all the way back in the beginning that Sarah was a digital lifeform, but Riku and his friends were too stupid to ever realize it. Why are we 80 percent through the show and only now it comes up that they never asked Sarah what her real name was, where she lived or if they could meet in person? After all, they met Ayame after her and then met her in real life, so how could the subject never have come up for Sarah? It was also clear that Sarah was responsible for the wings of light that appeared when Riku was fighting Tsukasa, and that has led to the problem that exists now. The mysterious bird we’ve seen for a couple of episodes is revealed as the game’s designer, but even she doesn’t know how to handle the situation. Sarah is now officially a fugitive, which will pit the Build Divers against all of GBN. This is the final conflict for the series, but it could all be avoided if the Game Master had simply talked to the Build Divers rather than taking this militant approach.
