Gundam Build Fighters Try Ep. 16: Magnificent Shia

In the middle of a battle, the Build Busters’ Umi Tryon, Sora Tryon and Riku Tryon combine to form the super robot-influenced Gundam Tryon 3. The crowd is shocked by the transformation, and the Meijin declares that Gunpla is freedom. Sekai is impressed by the Gunpla, but Yuuma sees no advantage in having a combining robot. Sakai tells him to shut up, and the Gundam Tryon 3 blocks an attack from a Calamity Gundam. Sakai then recalls begging Tendaiji Academy’s Plamo Club to let him join in the middle of the qualifiers, and one of them noted that he’d turned them down multiple times in the past. Team member Kodera decided to step down and let Sakai take his place so they could win. Sakai uses a rocket punch to destroy a Chaos Gundam, followed by a Liger Glare to destroy an Abyss Gundam and a Heat Wing to defeat the Calamity Gundam. The crowd is stunned with silence until someone starts clapping, which quickly becomes loud cheering. Sekai is impressed by Sakai’s skills, and Allan concludes that Sakai is a surprise dark horse. Later, Sekai and the others watch a show about the tournament, and there’s a segment focusing on Yuuma and Sakai as top builders. Sekai and Fumina are surprised to see that Yuuma was interviewed by Mirai on TV. Yuuma gets a call and suddenly leaves the room during the interview. China tells Yuuma that Sei saw him on TV, so she sees that he’s fulfilled his childhood promise to Fumina. He says the promise isn’t fulfilled until they win, and China tells him they’ll be cheering him on from afar. Several more battles are fought, including one in which the White Wolf Team destroys a Ninja Hyakkimaru and a Gundam Spiegel in a Japanese castle. On day three of the tournament, a GM III, Gundam Leopard and Fanton are destroyed by the Shiki triplets’ Snibal Gundam, Dragonagel Gundam and Giracanon Gundam. Allan, Wilfrid and Saga look over the battles so far and see that Tenzan Academy didn’t use Junya in the first round because they’re saving him. Allan is more concerned about the Granada Academy possibly using Lucas Nemesis. Wilfrid asks about Shia’s Gunpla, and Allan tells her it’s practically perfect.

The next day, a large crowd gathers to see the Gunpla Academy fight, but Kei vows that his team will defeat Celestial Sphere. Sekai is surprised that Shia is the third member of the Gunpla Academy’s team, and Lady wonders if Shia or Fumina will be her successor. A space battlefield is loaded, and Wilfrid tells Shia to fight alone as a penalty for completing her Gunpla so late and not allowing them to practice any formations. Shia’s G-Portent takes off and is confronted by the large mobile armor Vagan Gear K. Kei boasts that he’ll end the Gunpla Academy’s legend, but Saga thinks he should hold his tongue until winning. Kei unleashes a massive missile barrage, but Shia is able to move so delicately that she lightly touches the missiles without letting them detonate. Kei then fires a large beam attack, and Shia uses a particle transformation field to skate along the beam. She asks Kei to surrender because she doesn’t want to hurt his Gunpla, but he refuses. He then fires a large cannon at the G-Portent, but Shia used a GN field to completely block the attack. She then goes on the offensive and slices off the mobile armor’s appendages before it drifts away and explodes. Kei is shocked that his mobile armor was defeated by a single Gunpla. Sakai wonders if Shia is a better builder than both him and Yuuma. Lady asks Fumina if she can defeat Shia, and Fumina vows that she will. Later, Sekai practices martial arts in a field and is approached by Shia, who tells him that she’s Wilfrid’s little sister. Lucas watches a video of the battle and receives a package that contains a Crossbone Gundam X-1 Full Cloth.

The tournament continues with a couple of fights that pass very quickly, book ended by Sakai and Shia. Maybe these battles are supposed to show how powerful and skilled they are, but they don’t. In both cases, their opponents are pushover chumps. Kei has been a joke since his first appearance, and the only thing notable about his battle is that it marks the first use of a unit from Gundam AGE. The opponents Sakai faces are similar non-threats, but it’s made somewhat less annoying by the heavy super robot aesthetic of the Gundam Tryon 3. So many of the Gunpla in both this show and its predecessor have just been repaints or simple customizations. However, the Gundam Tryon 3 really shows creativity by taking the ZZ Gundam and remaking it into a straight up super robot. Overall, between useless opponents and quick, empty battles, there’s not much interesting happening here.
