Gundam Build Fighters Try Ep. 20: Unbreakable Heart

0
Summary

Fumina and Yuuma are surprised when Junya’s Denial Gundam does its own version of the Burning Burst. Junya declares that Sekai is just a stepping stone for his strength. He dares Sekai to show him his secret technique, so the Try Burning performs its phoenix punch. Junya whips his beam hair around and unleashes an attack that matches the phoenix punch. They then punch each other, and when Junya asks if this is the ultimate secret of Jigen Haoh, Sekai answers that he developed this on his own. Junya wants the ultimate secret so that he can grow to the limits of strength. Sekai doesn’t want that, so Junya dares Sekai to beat him and prove that his way of living is wrong. The Try Burning’s right arm starts to crack, and Junya grabs Sekai by that arm to perform a back flip. The crowd wonders if Sekai lost, and Junya tells him this is the limit of his strength because he only knows Jigen Haoh. Fumina and Yuuma arrive and encourage Sekai to stand up and fight Junya. Sekai stands up, but Junya is disgusted by his ethic of fighting fairly until the end. He attacks Sekai and uses his beam hair for a choke hold, which Sekai feels through assimilation. Yuuki and Lady know that Sekai can’t stop the assimilation as long as he wants to keep fighting. Junya uses a beam knife to stab into the Try Burning, which Sekai also feels. Sekai apologizes to the Try Burning for not being strong enough and causing it so much damage. He then sees a golden light, and the Try Burning starts glowing from releasing particles in the RG core unit. Junya flies in to attack with a pair of beam sabers, and Sekai creates multiple copies of himself that attack Junya with a combination of every Jigen Haoh technique. Junya sees that Sekai created such a move through his own unique strength, not through trying to absorb martial arts. The Try Burning blasts the Denial Gundam through the chest, bringing an end to the fight.

The crowd cheers when the announcer declares that Sekai is the winner. Outside the arena, Sekai thanks Fumina and Yuuma for their help and regrets wrecking the Try Burning, but Yuuma vows to fix it. Sekai asks Mirai if she thinks his fist reached Junya, but she thinks it did. Junya walks over and tells Sekai that he should stand tall as a winner. He says he finally understands why the master never taught him the ultimate secret, but Mirai explains that there is no such thing. She says the school has an inner mystery, and Junya comments that the pursuit of ultimate strength really is endless. As Junya walks away, Sekai asks if they’ll ever see each other again, but he gets no answer. Mirai thinks they’ll meet again because Sekai’s fist has engraved itself in Junya’s heart. Akira pulls up in his car outside and offers to give Junya a ride to the station. Junya admits that he lost just as Akira predicted because Sekai still had something he’d lost. Junya wants to start over from the beginning, and Akira asks him if he wants to play Gunpla Battle for fun. Junya asks Akira when he got his driver’s license, and Akira answers it was two days ago. This causes Junya to panic, and Akira loses control and starts driving wildly. At the arena, the next battle in the quarterfinals begins between Gabai’s White Wolf team and Granada’s Von Braun team. Coach Suriga asks Lucas why he volunteered to fight, and Lucas answers that watching Sekai fight got his blood boiling. Suriga cautions Lucas that the Gabai Institute has fought in the tournament for the last four years. Allan is informed that Lucas will be fighting, so he summons the team to watch the fight. The battle begins in space, with White Wolf’s Zakus facing off against only Lucas in the Crossbone Gundam X-1 Full Cloth. Sekai thanks Shimon and Kaoruko for bringing him food after his release from the dispensary. He admits that he was ready to give up, but the Try Burning cheered him on. He then leaves to help Yuuma and runs into Lucas by the elevator. Lucas asks about his injury and says he can fight Sekai in earnest. Sekai gets into the elevator and has a feeling that Lucas is on another level. He heads up to the room and is told by Yuuma and Fumina that White Wolf lost. Wilfrid feels a chill and thinks that Lucas’ Full Cloth is the greatest Gunpla in the tournament.

Commentary

The battle between Sekai and Junya reaches its conclusion, but it’s not particularly an amazing one. Like the battle against the Shiki triplets, I feel this one was unnecessarily padded out to two episodes, especially since the battle ends at the halfway mark. This episode leans pretty heavily on the martial arts cliches, so it’s obvious what the outcome will be. Junya is the former comrade who was led astray because his obsession with raw power blinded him to what real strength was. He was so convinced that there was an ultimate technique of Jigen Haoh that Sekai knew, but Mirai reveals there’s no such thing. Of course, Sekai’s fist reaches Junya, which sets him back on the correct path. It was pretty convenient that there’s an RG core unit that has all these particles in it, when it’s never been used or mentioned before now. Also, where did Sekai suddenly create this move of Try Burning doubles performing Jigen Haoh’s greatest hits (pun intended)? After some character stuff, we get another non-battle that has become a cliche itself in this series and its predecessor. I know the point is to show a shocking defeat by not having the actual battle displayed, but this trick has been used a few times already. Plus, we’ve already seen White Wolf lose before, so based on their skill level, a loss here was an absolute certainty. Overall, a weak conclusion to what should’ve been a major fight for the series.
