Gundam Build Fighters Try Ep. 9: Showdown at Solomon

0
Summary

G-Master wins the match, which leads Yomi to talk trash about how talentless Kaoruko’s team was. She keeps going despite Sudou’s warning, so Akira slaps her and tells her not to mock opponents who fought seriously. Sekai watches from the crowd and thinks that Akira is a fighting man. Fumina finds Kaoruko by herself and apologizes for not being Sekai. She wanted to bring him, but he said he wanted to see Kaoruko again in battle. Kaoruko confidently declares that she has a new Gunpla idea and vows that she’ll defeat the Miyazato Institute, Fumina and Sekai. Kaoruko leaves, and Fumina thinks to herself that she’s still bluffing. At the Kousaka restaurant, Fumina reviews the video of the G-Master fight with Sekai and Yuuma, and Sekai announces that he wants to fight Akira personally. Yuuma doesn’t think that’s a good idea because the Build Burning doesn’t have long-range weapons. He starts to greet a new customer when the doors swish open, but his expression sours when he sees it’s Sakai. Sakai immediately focuses on Fumina and praises the Winning Gundam while ignoring the others. Yuuma steps in and accurately guesses that Sakai built Sudou’s Mega-Shiki. Sakai explains that he’s known Sudou for a long time and was commissioned to build a Gunpla for the championship. Yuuma asks if this is Sakai’s revenge since he’s playing Gunpla Battle, but Sakai answers that it’s a coincidence. However, he thinks that the next battle will prove his superior Gunpla building skills. He then gulps down Sekai’s drink and leaves. At the Miyazato Institute, Akira looks at the handprint Yomi left on his face when she slapped him. Sudou explains that this is a normal reaction and that she must like Akira. Akira asks Sudou about being in the national tournament last year, and Sudou answers that he took things too lightly because it was his first time fighting at damage level A. That’s why this time he turned to Sakai to build him a Gunpla. He knows he’s violating the theory of Gunpla Battle by not building his own kit, but he just wants to win above all. Sekai practices martial arts and thinks of Ral’s coaching and Akira’s statement that Jigen Haoh wouldn’t work on him. Sekai is surprised to see Shimon, who along with Kaoruko offer to help him practice. At a photo shoot, Mirai asks for Sunday off so she can see Sekai’s battle. On the day of battle, Yomi arrives late and apologizes to Akira for her behavior. The Try Fighters hype themselves for the match and each declare what they’re fighting for. The battle begins in space outside the fortress Solomon. The Meijin watches the battle from the stands.

Yuuma plans to fly around Solomon to surprise the enemy while Fumina and Sekai fly through the fortress to the other side. The Mega-Shiki opens fire on the Lightning Gundam, and Yuuma reports that he can’t see the other two enemies. Inside Solomon, Sekai and Fumina immediately come under fire from Akira’s G-Bomber, which is towing Yomi’s Amethyst Victory Gundam. Sekai rushes in and performs Soten Guren-Ken, but Akira’s arms block the attack and grab the Build Burning. Sekai manages to break free, so Akira fires multiple claws that Sekai deflects with a pinpoint shield defense. Fumina and Sekai then retreat after she lays down covering fire against Yomi. Outside, Yuuma and Sudou fight with beam sabers, but Sudou’s saber cuts through Yuuma’s and damages the Lightning Gundam. Sudou fires his Mega Launcher at Fumina and Sekai, but Yuuma is hit instead. Sudou tries to re-aim the beam, but Yuuma destroys the Mega Launcher. Sudou stabs the Lightning Gundam, but Yuuma uses the opportunity to stab the Mega-Shiki and set off a large explosion. Akira unleashes all his weapons against Sekai, but Fumina defends and deploys the Winning Knuckle. Sei hits Akira and Yomi with a Seiken-Zuki that causes a large explosion, but doesn’t wipe them out. Yomi and Akira dock their units to make one more attack run on Sekai, which damages the Winning Knuckle. The Lightning Gundam’s BWS rescues Sekai from a needle barrage, and Sekai uses Fumina’s Core Fighter as a boxing glove. The Build Burning starts glowing as though it’s on fire, and Sekai uses his power to destroy Akira and Yomi. The Build Burning is damaged, but the battle hasn’t ended yet. Sudou’s damaged Mega-Shiki reappears, and he states that he threw away his pride as a builder for the sake of winning. Sudou boosts in and lands a punch on the Build Burning’s head, but his entire arm crumbles. The Mega-Shiki then loses power, which ends the battle as a victory for the Try Fighters. Sekai then passes out and is taken home to rest. Fumina visits and tells Mirai to wish him congratulations when he wakes up.

Commentary

The final battle of the West Tokyo qualifiers ends with a fight that isn’t particularly impressive. The last episode was supposed to set up G-Master as a big threat by showing how they crushed Kaoruko’s team. However, G-Master shows no new tricks in this episode and ends up losing anyway to the Try Fighters. Of course, the story dictates that they had to lose, but it feels like the battle was a letdown. Sekai didn’t get to have the decisive battle with Akira he was probably looking for, Sudou’s Mega-Shiki turned out to be a lesser threat than it seemed and Yomi was a total non factor. Also, all three members of G-Master returned from seeming defeat and accomplished precisely nothing. Outside of battle, Akira has that classic Sleggar moment by slapping Yomi for so arrogantly trash talking to Kaoruko. It’s good to see Shimon make a return appearance, but unfortunately we don’t get to see his training with Sekai. Although the battle was disappointing, Sekai’s fighting spirit has clearly caught the Meijin’s attention, which is a big deal.
