Summary

Sendo asks the team why he was stronger than them, and Kentaro answers that his Gunpla was superior. He breaks it down and says that Sendo’s build was equivalent to Takumi’s, and while his armaments were superior, his controlling was amateurish. By all accounts, he thinks the battle should’ve ended in a victory for BRIGHT. Kentaro asks what the trick was, and Sendo answers that there is no trick and the answer lies in that analysis. Back at the clubhouse, Takumi wonders if Sendo was telling them to improve their armament skills, and Taichi notes that they haven’t changed their armaments since before Sota left. Takumi blames himself for that since he wasn’t able to stop Sota from leaving, and Taichi tells him that no one is blaming him for that. The girls then start their next video on the subject of using makeup that won’t come off. When they mention silicone, Kentaro has a revelation and accidentally interrupts their video. He explains to them that Sendo was hinting at the paint’s ingredients, not just armament painting skills. He adds that Gunplasky adhesion rates affect the accuracy of the mobile suit’s performance – the more the particles adhere, the better the performance. He also says that the protective film they placed over Imaizumi’s paint is interfering with the analysis, so he removes it. Kentaro is amazed to realize that the right leg, with Imaizumi’s paint, has a high adhesion rate and asks Sendo if they can get more paint with the same ingredients. Sendo answers that such paint might be available overseas, and Hiro thinks of Imaizumi. Sendo knows a paint company and says he’ll ask if they can replicate Imaizumi’s paint. Back at the clubhouse, Takumi decides to work on a new weapon even though everyone else is going home. At the MONSTRE base, Jin watches as Sota works on a new shield. The next day, Hiro opens the Gunpla case and finds that the RX-78 is missing. Takumi arrives at the clubhouse and also asks where the RX-78 is. Kentaro tries to run down the possibilities: the girls took it, a thief took it or MONSTRE took it. Taichi thinks that Sota took it, but Hiro says he wouldn’t play dirty like that. The girls then walk in and say they have to talk. They present the team with a new RG 1/144 RX-78 kit and say they’re sorry. Satsuki explains that they were messing around and accidentally broke the RX-78. Hiro asks where the Gunpla is, and Mana adds that the more they tried to fix it, the more they messed it up. In the end, it was such a mess that they threw it away and decided to buy the RG kit. The boys start frantically searching all the trash cans, and Satsuki reveals that she decided to keep the broken kit in a plastic bag. The girls work with the boys to build the RG kit and repair the old RX-78. After they finish, Takumi says they can’t accept the new Gunpla, and Mana shows him a design of the RX-78 with a new color scheme that she thinks is cuter. Hiro practices his melee skills outside, and Kentaro and Taichi go inside because it’s getting cold.

Later, Hiro goes for a walk with Satsuki and she asks him how big a Gundam is. He tells her about 18 meters and says sometimes it feels crushing, but it wouldn’t look that big in this scenery. He then says she might be thinking of the size of kaiju and that Gundams are much smaller. She then asks about a drone flying overhead and Hiro explains that it’s like a Street View that updates the environment for Gunpla Battle. He asks if she wants to come watch their battle at the tournament, but she starts chasing after the drone. Satsuki shouts out to Hiro that he can do it and that he should remember her words if he’s in danger of losing. She then tells Hiro that she’s made a decision. Later, the team discusses what weapons they should bring due to the tournament having limitations. The new paint arrives, and Takumi gets to work spray painting the kit based on Mana’s new design. Takumi heads to Taku-chan and finds it full of people because Maiko told them about the tournament. The customers, all older men like Takuji, talk about how First Gundam was the best, especially Ramba Ral and his Gouf. After closing time, the customers leave and wish Takumi good luck tomorrow. Takumi shows the new RX-78 to Takuji and says he didn’t want to show it to the customers because they’re purists, but Takuji reminds him that they all share a love for Gundam. Sota continues to work on the new shield while Jin assembles the head for the Zaku II R-1A. Hiro lays in bed and watches an old video from when they were kids. He then goes to Taku-chan to show the video to Takumi and point out the emblem that Imaizumi was painting. Takumi stays up painting a “B” on the RX-78’s leg. The team then heads to the tournament site and they pass Sota in a hallway without saying a word. Team BRIGHT takes the stage in the first round against LUMINOUS, whom they faced before. The battle begins in a stadium between the RX-78 and a 00 Qan[T]. Hiro blocks a melee attack with his shield, and Taichi tells him to watch out for gunshots. After the first round, Hiro decides that he wants to use the Tactical Hammer. The 00 Qan[T] activates Trans-Am and attacks with its GN Buster Sword. Hiro responds by dual wielding both the Tactical Hammer in beam gun mode and a beam rifle. Taichi tells Hiro to hold out until the enemy’s Trans-Arm runs out. When it does, Hiro switches the Tactical Hammer to railgun and blasts the 00 Qan[T], scoring a K.O. In round two, team PSYCHO SHADOW deploys a Neo Zeong against BRIGHT. Hiro rushes in and stabs the Neo Zeong, getting another K.O. Satsuki, towing some luggage, leaves the clubhouse.

Commentary

Events start moving toward a conclusion as the regional tournament approaches. The team finally is working in sync, and they figure out a way to improve their RX-78 through painting. I quite enjoy the new paint scheme with the added blue on the arms, legs and shoulders. I’d go so far as to blasphemously claim that it’s an improvement over the default RX-78 colors. It’s good to see Hiro actually practicing and putting in effort, which clearly paid off with two wins in the tournament. The scene in Taku-chan with all the older Gundam fans is a nice touch, as it demonstrates the appeal the franchise has had across generations for 45 years. This episode definitely feels closer to the animated Build entries than all the ones before it.
