Gundam Evolve 10: MSZ-010S ZZ Gundam

0
Summary

In deep space Judau Ashta gets an alert of an incoming object and wonders if his ZZ-GR is malfunctioning. He calls the Jupitris II and speaks to Roux Louka, who asks about a special present for him on the list of incoming materials. She wonders if he asked for a present from a woman, but he says he didn’t. He then gets a message from the captain about the incoming units and is told that it’s a Zeon defector asking for protection. They’re being chased by mobile suits, and Judau decides to be careful since Neo Zeon remnants might still be in the area. The captain says that the ship will stay neutral, but he’ll leave the decision to Judau about what to do. Judau takes off in the ZZ-GR and heads for the direction of the incoming mobile suits. A shuttle comes under fire from several Neo Zeon Doven Wolf mobile suits. The shuttle’s outer pieces are ejected, revealing a Qubeley Mk-II underneath. The Qubeley releases its bits, which open fire on the Doven Wolf. Judau tells the pilot to stop because if they keep fighting, they won’t have enough propellant to reach the Jupitris II. Judau forcibly pushes the Qubeley to give it enough speed to reach the ship. Unfortunately, this uses up his own propellant. He then comes under fire from the Doven Wolf and realizes they’re both in the path of the shipping container. He then scans the content of the container and kicks the Doven Wolf into its way. The birthday present container from his sister Leina opens, revealing the Core Base from the original ZZ Gundam. Judau ejects his lower half and docks with the Core Base to form the ZZ Gundam. He then speeds over to the Jupitris II to defend it from the other attacking Doven Wolf and several Zakus. Judau destroys the Zakus and uses his high mega cannon to finish off the last Doven Wolf. He then looks over and sees that the Qubeley’s pilot has already dismounted. Roux welcomes him back, and he gets his birthday message from Leina, who explains that everyone pitched in to create new ZZ Gundam parts to send him. Roux tells Judau that she wants to have birthday cake with him, but he’s already left the cockpit. He opens her birthday present and isn’t too impressed by the food inside of it.

Commentary

Directed by Masaki Kitamura, this short is set after Gundam ZZ and focuses on the continuing adventures of Judau Ashta. At the end of ZZ, Judau and Roux left the Earth Sphere on the Jupitris II for a long trip to Jupiter. Although we don’t know how long after the show this is set, we get to see what Judau’s been up to. Because the ZZ Gundam got trashed in his final battle with Haman Karn, we see that Judau is using a slightly different version, the ZZ-GR. Judau is called into battle against some old enemies to defend a defecting Zeon pilot. We never see who this pilot is, but given that they’re fully using the Qubeley’s abilities, it’s highly likely to be a clone of Elpeo Ple. The original ZZ Gundam gets a moment to shine again, and it certainly looks nice in CG. While there’s not much of a story here, it is nice to see Judau again as a bit of an epilogue to ZZ.
