During the One Year War, Newtype Lalah Sune feels something and wonders if there’s someone out there like her. Newtype pilot Challia Bull is impressed with Amuro Ray’s ability to track him. Amuro’s Gundam dodges a series of all-range attacks from Challia’s mobile armor Braw-Bro and fires back several shots of his own. Amuro then flies into an asteroid field to hide, and he tries to tell the White Base to fall back because Challia isn’t like other enemies. Challia uses an all-range attack to destroy asteroids from multiple directions. Several GMs are destroyed by the attack as the White Base passes through the asteroid field. Amuro dodges several incoming attacks and fires back. Challia comments that Amuro must be a true Newtype for being able to avoid his attacks. Challia recalls meeting with Gihren Zabi and declaring that he didn’t believe himself to be a Newtype. Gihren said he knows more about Challia’s abilities than he knows himself. Gihren said that Challia had developed all the attributes of a Newtype, even if he wasn’t aware of them. Gihren said he didn’t understand all the factors that make one a Newtype, so he’d just assume Challia was one. Amuro continues to dodge Challia’s attacks and moves outside the asteroid field. Lalah feels that something is coming and believes that Char Aznable touched her heart. Amuro continues to evade Challia while firing off a few shots from his beam rifle. Challia then recalls meeting with Char, who introduced him to Lalah. Challia said that he felt great power from Lalah, and when Char asked what he felt about him, Challia answered that he didn’t know. Challia said that if they really were Newtypes, they should work toward a peaceful future for Newtypes. Char mentioned that they have a problem: the Gundam’s pilot was a Newtype, meaning that the Federation had them too. Later, Lalah told Char that she wasn’t sure if Challia really understood him. Amuro flies around and finally gets an image in his head of where Challia is. He then stabs the Braw-Bro with his beam saber and destroys it. Lalah feels that someone like her is definitely coming her way.
Directed by Kei Momose, the final Evolve shorts heads in a new direction by in part remaking an episode from the original series. In the TV show, Challia was little more than a throwaway Newtype that Amuro defeated in one episode. He doesn’t even appear in the movie trilogy. However, this short remakes part of their battle from episode 39, along with Challia’s encounters with Gihren, Char and Lalah. While it’s interesting to see radical redesigns of the Gundam, Guncannon and all the other mobile suits, it’s hard to see much because everything is so dark and the suits move so fast across the screen. I get that this is supposed to give the impression of speed, but it moves a bit too fast for my taste.
