Jezzi and Kaine praise Machu for her performance in the last Clan Battle, not knowing that she wasn’t actually piloting the GQuuuuuuX. She says nothing and thinks back to her shock at discovering that Nyaan had piloted her suit. Kaine mentions that their next opponents are the Twelves, who are at the top of the clan rankings. On the Sodon, Simus Al Bakharov reports to Challia and tells him that the Kikeroga is a treaty-prohibited weapon because of its psycommu system. She adds that even a rumor of it leaving base would cause trouble and Challia apologizes for the difficulties he’s caused. Comoli asks if they need to do something this risky, and Challia says to never mind. Simus explains that in three days the colony will host an unofficial conference where they’ll be meeting with the One Naval Initiative and Side 6 President Pergamino – a conference Gihren doesn’t know about. Comoli is surprised when Challia mentions that Kycilia will be coming to the conference. She then thinks about the possibilities of Kycilia aligning with the One Naval cartel, which is rivaling Zeonic and Anaheim Electronics. On the subway, Xavier meets with his intelligence contact, who points out that Xavier is being followed by detective Chaichi. The intelligence agent mentions that the Kikeroga has been brought into the buffer zone and they’re all on edge wondering what he’s up to with Kycilia on her way. He explains that Challia was previously a subordinate of Gihren and that he may be here to strike at Kycilia. He also mentions that Kycilia has another order for him. Underground, Machu prepares to enter Shuji’s underground area but stops when she spots Nyaan there. Nyaan attempts to make gyoza and thinks about how she wasn’t really a Mav to Shuji in the battle. He creeps up behind her and tells her that the Red Gundam said to stay how she is. He also says that the Gundam said it likes her either way. Machu leaves just before Nyaan exits the chamber and finds an apple she dropped. Nyaan thinks back to how Machu yelled at her for experiencing kira-kira, which Machu sees as only being for her. Back at home, Haro explains to Machu that Nyaan decided to pilot the GQuuuuuuX for her sake, and she answers that she knows that. Tamaki texts Machu to ask when the parent-teacher conference is and Machu is surprised that she’s going to come since she’s always busy. Nyaan meets with her delivery contact under the bridge and he awkwardly asks for her help. He takes her to a noodle shop and asks what gift he should buy for his daughter, who has a recital next week. As Nyaan slurps down noodles he asks her what she’s saving money for. Later, Nyaan returns to her small apartment and takes a bath and laments that she couldn’t eat with Machu and Shuji. Elsewhere, Annqi walks through a construction site alone to meet with Challia. He comments on how the area is being redeveloped to expand shelters and Annqi replies that it’s to prepare for war because the colony is over 70 years old. Challia mentions that Annqi used to be a Zeon citizen, but she tells him that she doesn’t believe in Zeon or Side 6. She then pulls out a cell phone that she claims is tied to explosives on the GQuuuuuuX.
Challia tells Annqi that he’s come to express his thanks over the valuable combat data they’ve gained from the GQuuuuuuX. He’s prepared to generously reward her for the return of the suit after it wins tomorrow’s Clan Battle. Annqi doesn’t understand and Challia explains that he loves seeing their Mav maneuvers and shows her his Pomeranians-decorated cell phone. Annqi says she can’t guarantee the suit will be undamaged because she has a weird feeling about the Twelve Olympians now being owned by a mysterious company called Amala Kamala. In space, the Amala Kamala transport ship Kobayashi Maru enters Izuma Colony’s dock, and an employee explains that the ship is carrying a large air conditioning unit ordered by the Colony Public Corporation to restore the atmosphere from the damage sustained in the war. Annqi puts away the cell phone and agrees to give the GQuuuuuuX back to Challia, but only if she can keep the prize money. Challia accepts and asks about the pilot, and Annqi answers that it’s a young lady. Machu sits at school with a teacher and thinks about how she yelled at Nyaan. Tamaki arrives late and apologizes for not being there earlier. The teacher mentions that they haven’t received Machu’s career survey and Tamaki angrily demands to know why Machu is skipping cram school every night. She wants to know what they’re going to tell her father and reminds Machu that they asked her to be serious about her future goals. The teacher tries to de-escalate by asking Machu what she wants to do, and she answers that she wants to swim in Earth’s oceans. Tamaki dismisses that as not being a career goal, which upsets Machu and causes her to storm out of the classroom. She heads over to the Pomeranians building and overhears Annqi telling Nabu that she knows the Red Gundam is hiding in what’s left of an old decommissioned airlock. Nabu asks Annqi if she followed Machu and she answers that it was so easy because Machu is too naive. Annqi mentions there being a bounty on the Red Gundam and how they can make far more than Clan-Bat prize money. She explains that they’ll give up the Red Gundam’s location tomorrow and then clear out once they have the money. Nabu asks about the GQuuuuuuX and she says they’ll leave it behind because Zeon is making moves and it’s best to cut ties. Machu walks into the office playing dumb and Nabu tells her to stop participating in Clan-Bat. He’s grateful that she helped them pay their debts, but he thinks she needs to stop and go back to school. He mentions that he turned everything off and walks out of the office. Distraught, Machu sits in the cockpit with Haro and thinks about how Shuji will run away if she tells him what she’s learned. She realizes that she needs to find a new place where he and the Red Gundam can both hide, but she doesn’t know where. Police Zakus fly on patrol close to the Sodon to intimidate its crew. Rassit asks Osillo what he’s found on Amala Kamala and he reports that the company is registered in an island country in the Far East. Rassit is suspicious because it’s located near an EFF research facility. Sepha asks if it’s the place conducting human experiments and Osillo answers that EFF intelligence is a dangerous group who use poison gas. Inside a hotel, Gates Capa uses binoculars to watch the Sodon. He recalls an earlier encounter in a ruined building with Bask Om where he said they didn’t expect to run into a Zeon ship. Bask knew it was Challia’s ship and thought the timing couldn’t be worse. Gates mentioned that Challia was rumored to be Zeon’s strongest Newtypes and Bask countered that they developed Cyber Newtypes like Gates to defeat people like Challia. He also mentioned that it has been five years since Kycilia left the Moon so they’d never get another chance like this. Gates asked if that intelligence was accurate and Bask answered that even within Zeon there were those who hate the Zabis. Bask believed their plan would succeed as long as Gates could keep Deux Murasame under control. Gates walks into Deux’s room and asks why she’s already putting on her psycho suit when the battle isn’t until tomorrow, and she answers that she can’t wait to get into her real body. He asks what she sees then in her reflection in the window, and she answers that she’s the heart of the Psycho Gundam. Gates thinks to himself that the work the Murasame Laboratory does is amazing. Deux puts her mask back on and says she wants to play in the kira-kira soon. Machu goes to the small temple where she had previously tracked down Nyaan. She prays and stops when Nyaan arrives. Machu says to Nyaan that she needs to tell her things about Shuji and the Red Gundam. Underground, Shuji starts spray painting over his kira-kira mural to make changes. Xavier runs through an alley at night and is cornered by detectives Ward and Chaichi, who draw their guns and prepare to shoot. However, they’re shot from above by Challia who is using a jetpack. Xavier asks what they should do with the bodies, and Challia answers that he killed them without thinking because of the urgency of the situation. He doesn’t want to give Side 6 an excuse to search their ship so he’ll call Gihren’s Secret Service and have them deal with it, until the matters concerning Kycilia are taken care of. Xavier thinks back to what his contact said and wonders if Challia is really after Kycilia, and if he can kill him. In space, Kycilia’s ship arrives at the Izuma Colony.
This is a densely packed episode full of character moments and political intrigue. Machu is still angry at Nyaan because she wants the kira-kira to be just for her, which we know is absolutely not the case since Char, Shuji and apparently Deux have all experienced it. Machu ends up putting on the pilot suit because she doesn’t want the Pomeranians folks to know that she didn’t pilot in the last Clan Battle. That ends up being a smart thing to do since we learn that Annqi is a former Zeon who plans to sell Machu and Shuji out for a big payday. We haven’t learned much of Nyaan’s background as a refugee until now, but we see from her belongings in her small apartment that she’s working to get into school. In other words, she wants the very thing that Machu, who comes from a privileged background, is rejecting. When it was announced that this series was set in UC 0085, I always wondered if we’d be getting an alternate version of the events of Zeta Gundam, and the answer to that question is yes. We’re introduced to this universe’s versions of Bask Om, the Cyber Newtype Gates Capa and a new character, the Murasame test subject Deux. They’re out to assassinate Kycilia, and possibly so is Challia, who acts especially mysterious in this episode. Shuji’s background is a total mystery, and given how odd he is, I wonder if he’s an escaped Murasame test subject. There’s a lot of callback to other things in this episode – Simus Al Bakharov makes an appearance, and she too was previously confined to appearing in the same Mobile Suit Gundam episode as Challia. Pergamino, also a TV series-only character, is also mentioned. The customs scene closely mirrors a similar scene in Gundam 0080, which also involved a mobile suit being smuggled into Side 6. Amala Kamala is a real world reference, and their ship’s name calls back to Star Trek‘s famous morality simulator for Starfleet cadets. And just for fun, the money in Annqi’s safe has Tomino’s face on it. A lot of pieces are set up on the chess board and it’s a question now of how they’ll move. Zabi factions plotting against each other is nothing new, but adding the Titans and a Psycho Gundam into the mix promises a chaotic situation no matter what.
