Gundam Reconguista in G: From the Past to the Future

0
Summary

As Bellri Zenam and Aida Surugan head to the Towasanga colony, she cautions him not to push the limits of his Core Fighter by flying too fast. She lands the Gundam G-Arcane on the colony’s surface, and Bellri comments that it seems very quiet. He picks up a signal on his sensors, and when he goes to investigate he nearly crashes into a Mack Knife. Bellri turns to attack it, but Aida snipes it from the distance with her rifle. She tells Bellri that she’ll stand watch here while he goes to pick up the Gundam G-Self. He initially objects, but she explains that it’s more dangerous to keep up the current situation. Aida fires her rifle and cannon pack to disable a Mack Knife, but her cannon pack is destroyed from above by Mask’s Gundam Unicorn 03 Phenex Type RC. Mask believes that the Capital Army can’t lose since it has the Rose of Hermes blueprints. He rushes in with his beam saber to stop her from firing her rifle, so she dodges and transforms to attack from above. Mask is annoyed that the I-field isn’t activating and the beam magnum is already running out of power. Mask gives chase and attacks with his beam saber, but Aida disarms him. Bellri docks and launches in the G-Self Space Backpack. Aida wraps her beam wire around the Phenex’s head and hears Mask talking about the oppression of the Kuntala. His anger activates the NT-D system, and he pulls Aida in close by the wire before ripping off the G-Arcane’s arm and knocking him away. He rips a metal rod out of the ground and tosses it at Bellri’s position. Bellri’s space backpack is damaged, and he lands in front of Aida to protect her. Mask tells him he doesn’t understand his people’s suffering, and Bellri accuses him of trying to ease his own pain. Bellri then hears Aida’s voice telling him that he can’t repeat the tragedy of the Universal Century. Bellri focuses and charges with both beam sabers, which he uses to slice into the Phenex and disable it. Later, two Mack Knifes come to pick Mask up. Aida wakes up in the G-Self’s cockpit as Bellri tows the G-Arcane in space. He comments that a nebula in the distance is beautiful.

Commentary

This short was screened at Gundam Front Tokyo, but it’s nothing substantial. It’s set in the second half of the series, as Aida and Bellri are at Towasanga and are aware that they’re siblings. They’re attacked yet again by Mask, who is randomly in a Unicorn Gundam that appears from nowhere. The only explanation we can take from this is that its specs were in the Rose of Hermes blueprints, which Mask mentions. Why the Capital Army would randomly decide to build a mobile suit that’s at least a millennium old is never explained. The suit’s performance picks up when Mask’s Kuntala rage activates the NT-D, but it’s still taken down pretty easily by Bellri. Of note, the mobile suit combat is in CG, while the characters are traditionally animated. This short also marks the only instance of the G-Arcane transforming, as this ability was never shown in the TV series. If you liked the TV series and want a few more minutes with some of the cast, check this out. Otherwise, there’s not much to see.
