Summary

Athrun and Nicol walk through the streets of Orb and note how peaceful the city is despite the battle yesterday. The two meet up with Yzak and Dearka to discuss what they’ve found. Dearka wonders if the Archangel is even in Orb, and Athrun says they need conclusive evidence either way if it is or isn’t there. Yzak comments that Orb is an enigmatic place. On Onogoro Island, the Archangel is repaired at the Morgenroete facility. Murrue tells Sai, Kuzzey, Miriallia and Tolle that they’ll be able to briefly visit their parents. While everyone is happy, Flay listens in and walks away. In his office, Uzumi examines Kira’s personnel file. In the mobile suit factory, Cagalli sees someone typing in the Strike Gundam‘s cockpit and doesn’t recognize at first that it’s Kira. Kira explains that he was told not to wear his military uniform. He then says that she’s a weird princess for hanging out in a factory, and she tells him she doesn’t like being called a princess. He says that now he understands why she was at Morgenroete in Heliopolis. Cagalli explains that she couldn’t get any answers from Uzumi about the mobile suits, so she went to Heliopolis herself to see. Though the GAT series of Gundams was supposedly developed without Uzumi’s consent, Cagalli says that he hasn’t personally said that himself. Kira then asks her about Sahib’s rebels, and she says she joined because her father said she hadn’t seen enough of the world. Kira asks her if she wants to fight, and she says she just wants to end the war. Kira says he doesn’t think the war can end even if they fight. Nearby, Miriallia, Tolle, Sai and Kuzzey meet with their parents and are overjoyed to see them. On the ship, Flay folds laundry while Kira examines the Astray OS. In his office, Uzumi meets with Haruma and Caridad Yamato. Caridad tells him that they agreed to never meet again, and Uzumi explains that the children met by accident and that it couldn’t be avoided.

On the ship, Flay wanders through the halls until she eventually reaches Kira’s room, where she finds him working on the Astray OS. She asks him why he didn’t go meet his parents, and he says it’s because he has to finish the Astray OS before the Archangel leaves Orb. She says that’s a lie and pounds her fist on the table. Flay asks if he’s pitying her and not seeing his parents because no one is coming to see her. She says she doesn’t want his pity and says that he is the one who should be pitied because he fights and still can’t protect people. Kira remembers the girl and the shuttle, and Flay cries and pounds on his chest. Kira tells her to stop and says they should stop because they are wrong for each other. Flay asks him what he means and runs away crying. Nearby, everyone says goodbye to their parents. The Yamatos tell Uzumi that they will never tell Kira about his sibling and plan to stick to the original agreement. Uzumi is worried about the children not knowing, but Haruma and Caridad want to keep up appearances. Uzumi asks why Kira didn’t visit them, and they say that Kira only said he didn’t want to see them now. At Morgenroete, Asagi tries out the M1 Astray with the improved OS and is able to move as well as Kira. Mu asks if he could pilot a mobile suit like that, and Erica offers to let him pilot one. When Kira leaves, Mu asks him why he has a displeased look on his face. Kira says he isn’t displeased, and Mu asks why he didn’t go visit his parents. Kira gets into the Strike Gundam’s cockpit, and he answers that he didn’t see them because he’s in the military now. Murdoch tells Kira to prepare to test the Launcher Strike Gundam‘s Agni cannon. Kira also says that if he met his parents he’d ask something he doesn’t want to ask: why they made him a Coordinator. Birdy flies off of Kira’s shoulder, and Kira runs after it. Outside Morgenroete, Athrun, Dearka, Nicol and Yzak wonder how they can sneak in. Athrun is shocked when he sees Birdy fly out of a building and land on his hand. Soon after, Kira runs out to find Birdy. Athrun walks over to the fence and gives Birdy back to Kira. Kira says that Birdy was a special present from a special friend. Erica and Cagalli drive by in a car, and Cagalli gets out when she sees Kira and Athrun. Dearka tells Athrun they have to leave, and Athrun gets into their car.

Commentary

After two clip shows, we finally get a full new episode. This time, the Archangel is still being repaired at Orb’s Morgenroete facility. There’s a few things going on here, most notably Kira’s breakup with Flay. I’m glad he finally did that, because she was only manipulating him and his emotions. What she will do next is anybody’s guess. We also get some background on Cagalli that explains why she popped up where she did at various points in the series. Kira’s friends all get to meet their parents, but he decides to avoid his. There’s a lot of talk between his parents and Uzumi about an “agreement” and “siblings.” Though no one explicitly says so, it’s obvious they’re referring to Kira and Cagalli. The question is, why are they related, and was Cagalli made a Coordinator and never told, or is she just a Natural? Kira also improves the Astray OS, which seems to inspire Mu to want to be a mobile suit pilot. Finally, Kira has another awkward encounter with Athrun. If Yzak knew who Kira was, that whole encounter would have probably ended quite differently.
