Gundam Wing Ep. 14: The Order to Destroy 01

0
Summary

Heero and Trowa conduct research using a library computer, and Heero is unable to grab a falling disk because of his injured left arm. Trowa sees that he’s pulled up a file on Sylvia Noventa, the granddaughter of Field Marshal Noventa. Elsewhere, Noin and Relena sale on a yacht in Germany and Relena is displeased by the sight of several mobile suits. She asks why the Romefeller Foundation developed mobile suits, and Noin answers that people fear large machines. She also thinks that Romefeller must’ve admired mobile suits because they have a human shape. Relena and Noin then arrive at their destination in Bremen for a meeting of Romefeller Foundation. Noin pats Relena down for weapons and tells her that inside the meeting are men responsible for the death of her father and the destruction of the Sanc Kingdom. Relena promises that she won’t do anything as the representative of the peace-oriented Sanc Kingdom. Romefeller leader Duke Dermail gives a speech and states that humanity has too many problems to solve through dialogue, so they need a system of control. Dermail thinks that the Alliance lacked the talent to rule and believed in flawed ideas like equality and freedom. The crowd cheers for Dermail, and Relena can’t believe OZ is using these methods to conquer the world. Noin explains that Romefeller hid its agendas within the Alliance, and OZ started its rebellion under the guise of world peace. Relena thinks the Gundams could beat OZ, but Noin points out that the Gundams have been silenced by the threat to the colonies. Dermail then introduces Treize to the crowd, and Treize says that people need a system above God to protect them because God let humanity run free. He thinks that God couldn’t have predicted a world of endless wars, so God would understand what OZ wants to accomplish. Noin thinks they should leave, but Relena has slipped away and grabs the microphone on the stage. She tells the crowd that they are wrong and the Gundams will come to fix their mistakes. Noin grabs the mic and tells Relena that there’s no point talking to these people. Treize apologizes to Dermail for Relena’s outburst and explains that she’s the sister of a friend. Dermail tells Treize that he gives Zechs too much freedom and that he shouldn’t be allowed to rebuild the Wing Gundam. Treize states that if the Romefeller Foundation decides so, he’ll order Zechs to destroy it. Noin relays the news to Zechs and says it’s a sign of how much damage the Gundams caused OZ. Noin asks him if he’ll destroy the Gundam, but he changes the subject to Relena. She told Relena that Zechs was a soldier from the Sanc Kingdom. Noin asks Zechs why he won’t reveal himself to Relena. Relena says to herself that she could burn down the castle, but God would never forgive her. Treize thinks that he might be punished for his profanity toward God, so the punishment should be appropriate.

Heero and Trowa travel to Marseilles, France, where Sylvia leaves. An Alliance soldier asks Sylvia to evacuate for fear of an OZ attack, but she declines. The soldier comments that Marshal Noventa was a good person, and Sylvia begins to cry. An air raid alarm then sounds as several Aries suits approach the city. The Alliance Leos open fire on the Aries, but several are destroyed by the Aries. One Aries pilot is shot down and when he exits his cockpit is knocked out by Trowa. They use the radio inside the Aries to find out where OZ is deploying, and Trowa reminds Heero that OZ can’t find out there’s a Gundam in the city. The Alliance forces suffer heavy casualties, and Sylvia is nearly killed by an exploding Leo. Heero almost runs over her by accident and crashes into a building to avoid her. Several Leos are pushed into one of the underground water channels and discover the Gundam Heavyarms. The unit commander decides that they’ll have to hold out until the Gundam pilot returns. Trowa then arrives just as the last Leo is destroyed. Trowa opens fire on the Aries and slices several apart with his knife. He doesn’t want to get involved in an OZ-Alliance battle, but he can’t let them see the Gundam. Heero and Sylvia visit Noventa’s grave and he lays down flowers on the ground. Heero then hands Sylvia a gun and admits that he was the one who killed Noventa. He says that he made a mistake and accidentally killed Noventa and his peace advocates. Sylvia grabs the gun, and Heero says he can’t undo his mistake, but he hopes their pain can be relieved by his death. Sylvia calls him a coward and says he just wants to take the easy way out by dying. Heero answers that this is all he can do for her, and he plans to visit her grandmother next in Sicily. Trowa says to himself that everything Heero does is thought out. Sylvia asks Heero how he can kill people, and Heero responds that it’s the only way he knows how to live. At Lake Victoria, Zechs and Meiser detonate the Wing Gundam’s parts for Inspector Acht, a Romefeller official. Acht asks to inspect the remains personally for his own report to Romefeller. As he leaves by boat, Acht suspects that he won’t find anything because Zechs is so thorough. But he thinks Zechs is opposing Romefeller, and he believes taking down Zechs will help him rise in the ranks. Meiser tells Zechs that Acht won’t find anything, and Zechs apologizes for making him part of the lie. Meiser says it would be a shame to destroy the Wing Gundam at this point, but for this show they’ve destroyed most of the Tallgeese‘s spare parts. Nearby, the completely reconstructed Wing Gundam lies at the bottom of the lake.

Commentary

This episode places its focus on Heero and Trowa, who have been traveling together since leaving the circus. Heero tracks down Sylvia Noventa and offers to let her kill him in exchange for having killed her grandfather. He’s determined to die for his mistake, but she thinks he wants the easy way out. Elsewhere, Relena visits a Romefeller meeting and causes some trouble by telling the assembled aristocrats that the Gundams will correct their mistakes. Noin is right in stopping her and saying that there’s no point trying to talk sense into these people. The meeting also introduces one of the main antagonists, Romefeller leader Duke Dermail. Similar to the Ronahs of Gundam F91, Dermail makes the case that the nobility are needed to guide and control humanity. Finally, Zechs and Meiser put on a nice show for Acht by destroying a fake Wing Gundam, but Acht knows that Zechs is hiding the truth. This’ll cause problems in the near future.
