Gundam Wing Ep. 30: The Reunion with Relena

0
Summary

OZ troops loyal to Romefeller attack soldiers from the Treize Faction in a forest. Heero fights for the Treize Faction in a Leo and recalls Quatre telling him they shouldn’t get involved in an internal OZ dispute. Heero points out that since there are execution orders for the Gundam pilots, this is his way of showing Romefeller he’s alive. Quatre wonders if this is ok and leaves the area. In the Sanc Kingdom, Dorothy reads Romefeller’s on Heero and Quatre. Quatre walks into a European town and watches as two OZ soldiers harass an old fruit seller. The mayor tells an OZ commander that their people believe in the total pacifism advocated by the Sanc Kingdom, so they want nothing to do with OZ’s civil war. The commander thinks it’s convenient for the people to suddenly declare themselves pacifists when the army becomes a nuisance. Quatre asks the old man if he’s ok, and the old man tells him fighting back would make things worse. The old man asks Quatre if he’s a traveler and says he’s picked the worst time to come to town. An air raid siren goes off, and several OZ Aries suits fly overhead and begin fighting Treize Faction Leos just outside of town. Christ, the Treize Faction commander, gives combat orders while fighting in his Leo. The mayor asks about evacuating civilians, but the commander says they’ll defeat the Treize Faction before it gets to town. As OZ’s forces advance on Christ’s group, Heero’s force lies in wait inside the trees. He recalls Christ going over the battle plan, which was to split their force in two and lure in the enemy. The OZ commander orders their front line troops to engage the Treize Faction. The battle begins to spread into town, and Quatre thinks to himself that the civilians who did nothing wrong suffer the most in war. He’s forced to quickly jump aside to evade a falling Leo. Heero watches as civilians run out of a church and is surprised that there was no evacuation. He spots a mobile rocket launcher and suddenly jumps in front of the church to defend it. The OZ pilots turn their focus to Heero when he announces over the radio that he’s a Gundam pilot. Heero reports that his Leo is damaged and retreats into the smoke.

At the Sanc Kingdom, Relena tells her students that total pacifism has no need for weapons, but the Sanc Kingdom won’t be safe unless the whole world embraces that idea. She hopes that someone can come up with an idea for eliminating war as quickly as possible. Dorothy comments that if everyone in the world were like Relena, war would disappear, but then no one would know how special Relena is. Relena answers that while her views may look naĂŻve to some, she thinks they’re close to finding an answer that will bring peace to the world. Dorothy counters that wars never end because people love to fight, and Relena says innocent lives are lost as a result. Dorothy responds that she’s interested in taking action, not the results of it. Dorothy says that to fight is to be human, but Relena doesn’t agree. Dorothy thinks the Sanc Kingdom will become the world’s center stage, and Relena vows to promote total pacifism as long as she lives. Back at the town, the OZ commander is informed that a Gundam pilot is fighting for the Treize Faction. He thinks the country is doomed, so they might as well destroy it in the name of victory. Quatre finds the old fruit seller, who is preparing to leave town. Several Virgo mobile doll transports arrive just outside of the town. The fruit seller tells Quatre that their nation has decided to follow the Sanc Kingdom’s policy of total pacifism. Pagan tells Relena that she has many responsibilities and shouldn’t overwork herself. He still worries about Dorothy, but Relena thinks that someday Dorothy will understand. Pagan reveals to Relena that Noin secretly had him searching for Heero. He tells her that Noin has gone to bring Heero to the Sanc Kingdom. Heero and the rest of the Treize Faction come under attack from the Virgos. The Virgos easily mow down the Leos, leaving only Heero in his damaged unit. Quatre and the old man continue to discuss pacifism, and Quatre sees a possibility to bring peace to Earth. He then steals an Aries from an OZ soldier and flies off. Heero stands up and decides to keep fighting longer than anyone else, including Relena. Quatre rushes in and punches a Virgo near Heero, destroying it. He tells Heero they have to protect the Sanc Kingdom. Noin’s SST flies overhead and drops the Wing Gundam‘s buster rifle. She then destroys several Virgos as backup while Quatre wipes out the rest with the buster rifle. Later, Relena goes to the airport to greet Heero and Quatre. Pagan apologizes to Noin for telling Relena about Heero, but Noin says the smile on Relena’s face outweighs the suffering they’ll soon experience.

Commentary

Although the second Earth arc continues in this episode, not much happens here. As the title indicates, the whole point of the episode is to get Heero to the Sanc Kingdom and reunite him with Relena. Heero had joined up with the Treize Faction against Quatre’s wishes. As a result, we see that good old character armor enshroud a Leo once again. We know Leos explode if you so much as sneeze at them, but Heero’s unit takes a beating from several Virgos and manages to survive. We see that Dorothy is certainly well informed about current events, as she knew Heero would arrive in the Sanc Kingdom before Relena did. We also see that a growing number of nations are starting to adopt the Sanc Kingdom’s total pacifism, which will be problematic for Romefeller.
