Ideon Ep. 34: After the Meteors Fall

0
Summary

Meteors fall on the Buff Clan home world. One of Emperor Zuou’s underlings reports to him that Doba is heading out to take on the Giant God. A magnificent fleet of warships departs from the Buff Clan Homeworld, led by the Bairal Jin. The crew of the Gadomowa Zan watches. Hannibal Gen hopes to defeat the Giant God before they arrive so he can get promoted. The Gadomowa Zan and its accompanying ships enter Null Space. The Solo Ship crew wonders what is causing changes in the Ideon Gauge’s power. Karala thinks the Ide is a living being with an ego and that it alone will make decisions about what’s best. A fleet of warships depart the Earth, led by Marshall Franklin’s Scarabelli. The ships enter Null Space. The Gadomowa Zan tracks the Solo Ship near the planet Doumou Star, a planet previously investigated by the Buff Clan. The Solo Ship detects the oncoming Buff Clan ships. Karala is reminded of the prior encounter with the Dorowa Zan. She goes to see Bes, who is awake, but still sick in bed. Bes wants to DS Out but knows that wherever they head the Buff Clan will follow them. The Gadomowa Zan rams itself into the Solo Ship. The Solo Ship departs from Null Space and the Gadomowa Zan follows it. The Solo Ship appears in front of Doumou Star and descends down to the planet. Hannibal is happy to see them heading down there. Cosmo wonders if they have entered a trap. The Buff Clan suddenly attacks, knocking the Solo Ship into a nearby body of water. The three Ideon units take off and immediately end up flying into the mouth of a large worm like creature. Gije explains that the giant creature is called a Doumou and thinks this is why the Buff Clan caused them to arrive near this planet. The Ideon units have a hard time flying around the multiple Doumous that come out of the water. The Gadomowa Zan soon arrives and launches more forces, attacking the Doumous. Karala warns Hatari about harming the Doumous, who are docile creatures that are actually giving them cover. She wants to retreat. Karala realizes that Bes has gotten worse and leaves to go see him.

Cosmo spots a waterfall where he thinks they can combine into the Ideon. Karala finds Bes talking in his sleep. In a dream Bes confronts the Ide, a being made up of hundreds of millions of consciousnesses about the path humanity is taking. Bes awakens as Sheryl and Lou come to see him. Bes says the Ide is trying to prolong its life. Lou starts saying “Ide.” The Buff Clan’s forces approach the waterfall where the three Ideon units are hiding. While there they see many large Doumou eggs and encounter one hatching. The Buff Clan’s forces soon break through the waterfall and battle the three Ideon units. Bes doesn’t want to depart the cave, trying to protect the Doumous. The Gadomowa Zan comes through the waterfall as well. The Ideon gauge suddenly appears and the Ideon docks on its own. Moving by itself, the Ideon grabs ahold of the Gadomowa Zan and carries it out of the waterfall, throwing it into the ground. The Ideon swords appear, blowing up multiple Buff Clan ships. New forces arrive, causing the Ideon and Solo Ship to retreat. The new forces end up being the ships that just left Earth. Hannibal’s Gido Mack puts up a white flag. He meets with Marshall Franklin and proposes teaming up to defeat the Giant God. Marshall seems reluctant at first about whether the Ide is behind the meteors falling. Aboard the Solo Ship bridge the crew wonders if the Ide was thinking of just the Doumou eggs, or of them as well. Bes comes aboard the bridge, now recovered. Meteors appear behind the Solo Ship as it departs.

Commentary

Yet another excellent episode as the series approaches its climax. For the second episode in a row the Solo Ship and Ideon come across a part of space with dangerous creatures. Thankfully the Doumous are a lot more interesting than the Vandes from the previous episode. They remind one of the giant sand worms from Frank Herbert’s well-known book Dune. The Ideon poses great power and moves on its own, although whether it was to protect the Doumou eggs or the Ideon crew is a mystery. The Buff Clan emperor makes his sole appearance in the TV series, not even having a single line. After a break of one episode, the Earth military sends out yet another group of ships to try and take hold of the Ideon and Solo Ship. It’s now reaching the point where the Earth is pondering teaming up with the Buff Clan simply to get ahold of the great power of the Ideon and Solo Ship. Bes’s dream with the Ide continues along with the explanation of the nature of the Ide started in episode 27. This dream would be combined with Cosmo’s from episode 26 in the compilation movie, making this the final episode of the series with footage in that movie. Great animation, revelations and an interesting setting make this episode one of the best of the series.
