The Orb Union’s weapons research led to the creation of a new type of battleship: the Izumo class. This new battleship design also served as the basis for the Earth Alliance’s new Archangel class. While the Kusanagi was operated by the Athha family, the Izumo belonged to another of Orb’s ruling families, the Sahakus. Because it was the inspiration for the Archangel class, much of its weaponry and internal design was the same. In early C.E. 74, several Izumo class ships from Orb’s space fleet launched from the lunar city Copernicus and joined with the Three Ships Alliance near the end of the Second Bloody Valentine War. Their goal: to seize control of Requiem, a Moon-based Alliance cannon that ZAFT had captured and intended to fire at the Orb mainland on Earth. During the battle, Requiem was destroyed by Athrun Zala’s ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam and Neo Roanoke’s ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam.
