Blue Comet SPT Layzner is a TV series that aired exclusively in Japan from 1985-1986. Directed by Ryosuke Takahashi, the staff includes mechanical designer Kunio Okawara, character designer Moriyasu Taniguchi and composer Hiroki Inui, all of whom previously worked on VOTOMS titles with Takahashi. The series is set in an alternate 1996 where the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union continues and has extended to Mars. The story focuses on Eiji Asuka, a defector from the planet Grados who comes to Mars to warn humanity of his people’s impending invasion. The series was canceled well short of its intended run following the withdrawal of sponsor Sanyo. Soon after its cancelation, Sunrise released three OVAs – the first two act as recaps of the TV series, while the third revises and expands the finale. Bandai Entertainment licensed the series for North American distribution in 2001, but the release was later canceled. In 2023, Discotek Media released the TV series and OVAs on home video in North America.
