Hikaru destroys more Regults as he makes his way through the city in his Valkyrie. On another street, Kamjin and his men encounter three Regults wandering around aimlessly. He asks them what they’re doing, and they say they don’t want to fight because they’re looking for Minmay. He shoots one of them, and the other two run away along with his own men. He begins chasing after his own men and executing them for desertion. Vanessa reports to Global that the Zentradi are in disarray, so he orders the Valkyrie teams to enter the ship and take control. Hikaru reaches the concert hall and sees Kaifun kiss Minmay. Misa calls him, and he tells her to send a rescue party before shutting off his radio. He then leaves just before Minmay pushes Kaifun away. Feeling angry, Hikaru rushes in and destroys several Regults by himself. Nearby, the micloned Zentradi exit their Regults and find a broken Minmay doll. They realize that they’re responsible for all the damage done to the city. Britai hears reports of men deserting, so he orders a retreat and asks Kamjin to detain the deserters instead of kill them. With the battle over, Hikaru is asked to report to the conference room. He is shocked to see Loli, Conda and Warera and asks what they’re doing there. Misa says that they and 23 other Zentradi soldiers have defected to the Macross. Hikaru thinks it’s preposterous to accept them after all the time they’ve been fighting; this pleases Maistrov and another colonel in opposition to Global, Misa and Max. Misa tells Hikaru that she thought he would understand the Zentradi based on his experience with them. She reminds him of what they saw on Britai’s ship and that the Zentradi know only war and nothing else. Hikaru questions the spies and asks them why they want to be on the Macross. The spies explain it is because humans are Protoculture and possess things the Zentradi lack. Hikaru changes his mind and agrees they should stay, which displeases Maistrov. Maistrov says aliens can’t live with humans, and Misa thinks they have to to end the war. A physician enters and gives Global a report on Zentradi blood, which he hands to Maistrov.
Maistrov looks at the report and can’t believe that human and Zentradi DNA are identical. Global thinks that this confirms Misa’s earlier report, but Maistrov doesn’t want to believe it. Global agrees to grant them asylum, but Maistrov objects and says such a decision should be made by U.N. Spacy. Global tells Maistrov he’s out of line, and Maistrov leaves. Afterwards, Hikaru and Misa walk through the city and see the devastation. Misa didn’t realize how bad it was from just looking at pictures on the monitor. As they walk through a less damaged area, Hikaru sees that no matter how much he tries not to, he always ends up back at the Nyan-Nyan restaurant. Feichun and Shaochin come out of the restaurant, and Hikaru and Misa run over to them. They say they want to go look for Kaifun and Minmay, but Hikaru tells them they’re at the hospital. They ask if they were both injured, and she says it was only Kaifun. They want to head for the hospital immediately, and Hikaru and Misa agree to watch the restaurant for them. Inside, Hikaru sweeps up debris while Misa cleans the tables. She goes to get some tea from the kitchen, and Hikaru stares at a picture of Minmay and thinks about Kaifun kissing her. He sits down to have tea with Misa and asks if she’s going to visit Kaifun. She tells him that her feelings are only the result of Kaifun’s resemblance to Riber, and the situation with the defectors caused her to forget Kaifun. She asks Hikaru if he’s told Minmay how he feels, and he says it doesn’t matter now. She warns him that if he doesn’t he’ll regret it later. A battle alert is sounded, and Hikaru runs out to fight a small force of stragglers left behind. After the battle, Misa asks Global for permission to go down to Alaska to speak to her father. She believes that she can convince him and show him the three spies as proof that the war can be ended. Global agrees and tells her to leave immediately. Hikaru exits and elevator and turns a corner just as Misa comes around another corner and enters the elevator, but neither sees the other.
The cliffhanger from the last episode is resolved fairly quickly here. The situation continues to change with more Zentradi deserting in the face of human culture. Hikaru encounters Kaifun kissing Minmay, and this seems to finally push him to give up about her. Misa also realizes that her feelings for Kaifun are only because of his resemblance to Riber and nothing more. The defecting Zentradi bring with them a new hope for ending the war, but blind fools like Maistrov can’t see that. Misa thinks she can convince her father of what they’ve discovered, but he doesn’t seem like the type to listen.
