During the tumultuous events of the Gryps War, the Earth Federation Forces had become dominated by the anti-Spacenoid Titans, who ruled through fear and intimidation. At a major turning point, AEUG leader Quattro Bajeena (aka Char Aznable) broke into the Federation’s national assembly at Dakar and denounced the Titans before the world. Learning the truth, the EFF quickly moved to support the AEUG and oppose the Titans. During this shift in alliances, the EFF began supplying the AEUG and its terrestrial branch, Karaba, with new weapons to fight the Titans and Axis Zeon. One such weapon was the MAK-005S Gaplant Custom developed at the Augusta Newtype Lab. Based on the ORX-005 Gaplant, the Gaplant Custom was a high performance mobile armor capable of both space and atmospheric combat. Instead of a transforming mobile suit, the Gaplant Custom was developed as a rapid-strike mobile armor that retained the basic shape of its predecessor’s mobile armor mode. The wing-mounted beam cannons of the original Gaplant were replaced with diffuse beam cannons, which were supplemented with the addition of vulcan guns and missile launchers. Since it was not intended for melee combat, the Gaplant Custom focused on making rapid, powerful strikes against enemies. Because Karaba already has the Zeta Plus series of mobile suits, the Gaplant Custom’s production was limited to 20 units and used primarily to attack enemy units as they enter the atmosphere.
