Technical and Historical Notes
The mainstay of the Earth Federation Space Force, the Salamis class light cruiser made up the vast majority of the Earth Federation Forces fleet. Named after an earlier class of ship in service at the start of the Universal Century, the Salamis class, like the Magellan class, was a product of the 70s Armament Reinforcement Plan. Salamis class ships, like the Magellan class, carried a small re-entry shuttle on the ventral hull. Though armed with six mega particle cannons, two missile batteries, and several machine gun turrets, the Salamis class proved highly ineffective in combat against the Principality of Zeon's Musai class light cruiser with its mobile suit complement and more effective long-range weapons. Nonetheless, Salamis class cruisers were produced in such numbers that they were continually updated and refitted, with some remaining in service until at least UC 0153.
