Technical and Historical Notes

More than 300 years ago, Gjallarhorn created 72 Gundam Frames in an effort to fight off the existential threat of unmanned mobile armors during the Calamity War. Compared to standard mobile suits, these high performance machines each mounted two Ahab reactors. The Gundams also utilized the Alaya-Vijnana system, a man-machine interface in which plugs from the cockpit would connect to spinal cord implants protruding from the pilot’s back. This system allowed data to flow both ways between the Gundam and the pilot’s brain, and it also allowed for human-like movement. However, exceeding the system’s safety limits could permanently injure the pilot’s body. The names and model numbers of all the Gundams corresponded to the names and ranks of demons from the Lesser Key of Solomon.

The ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos was named after the demon Duke Barbatos. At some point prior to P.D. 323, the abandoned Gundam Barbatos was found in the Martian desert by Maruba Arkay, president of Chryse Guard Security. In its deteriorated state, the Gundam Barbatos mounted a gauntlet on its left forearm and was missing its shoulder armor and cockpit block. To correct the latter deficiency, an Alaya-Vijnana compatible cockpit from a TK-53 CGS Mobile Worker was installed. Instead of combat, Arkay used the Gundam Barbatos to power the CGS base. In P.D. 323, CGS took on a new job to transport Kudelia Aina Bernstein to Earth, which resulted in an attack by Gjallarhorn. Young Mobile Worker pilot Mikazuki Augus, who uncommonly possessed three Alaya-Vijnana implants, was chosen to pilot the Gundam Barbatos into battle. In this form, the suit’s armaments were limited to the gauntlet and a mace. Mikazuki successfully fought off several EB-06 Graze Standard Types, and the shoulder armor from one of these suits was used to upgrade the Gundam Barbatos to its 2nd Form.
