Technical and Historical Notes

The Fan Racer was a civilian fan jet racer. With its double fan jet engine and six rocket boosters, the Fan Racer was designed for high speed acrobatic maneuvers. In February 2009, civilian pilot Hikaru Ichijyo flew to South Ataria Island at the invitation of Roy Focker for the launch ceremony of the Macross. Hikaru showed up his old mentor by interrupting a flight demonstration of the new VF-1 Valkyrie. When the alien Zentradi attacked the island, Roy had Hikaru and Lynn Minmay taken to a hangar on the Macross where the Fan Racer was stowed. Not wanting to stay on the Macross, Hikaru and Minmay left the ship and attempted to fly back to South Ataria Island. However, their departure coincided with a risky atmospheric fold operation performed by the Macross. As a result, the Macross, the Fan Racer and South Ataria Island de-folded in space near Pluto. Although not designed for space use, Hikaru was able to use the Fan Racer’s remaining thrust to return to the Macross, but the plane was damaged beyond repair in a crash landing.
