Mospeada Ep. 16: Trap Reggae

Summary

The Refless destroys two Gamos and transforms their core life forms into a male humanoid named Battlar and a female named Solzie. The Refless gives them Gosu mecha and tells them that they’re close to becoming perfect life forms. She orders them to travel to the southern ocean, and they depart from Reflex Point. Stick and the others look at the ocean from the northern tip of South America. Mint spots an old navy base, and Ray wonders if there’s something they could make use of, which gives Stick an idea on how to avoid Inbit patrols. Everyone then begins to work on an old PT Boat, and Yellow spots a Grab patrol. Jim reports to Stick that he’s dismantled the Jeep and loaded it inside the TLEAD, and Yellow reports on the Inbit patrol. With preparations complete, the PT Boat sets off with two smaller boats in tow. The three Legiosses and TLEAD then take off and draw the attention of the Grabs. Houquet’s Zeta Legioss is damaged, so Ray attacks the Grabs to draw them off. However, the grabs cease their pursuit once the group leaves the shore. Houquet thanks Ray for saving her, but she doesn’t mention her leg and arm injuries. Later, the group makes an emergency landing at an island resort. Mint tends to Houquet’s injuries while Ray goes for a swim on the beach. Jim begins repairs to the Zeta Legioss, and Stick tells Houquet they should be ok as long as they don’t use any HBT. Ray asks Houquet to join him on the beach, and Stick comments on how beautiful the ocean is. Nearby, the Gosus lead a patrol of Eagers in the sky and land break off to land on the same island without anyone noticing. Yellow explores some ruined buildings and eventually wanders off into the jungle. He takes a dip in the river, and his singing is picked up by Solzie’s Gosu. Yellow senses the presence of something and sees a shadow running nearby. He casually moves away from the stream and pulls Solzie into the water when she approaches. Yellow is surprised and asks Solzie what kind of suit she’s wearing and what she’s doing there. She struggles to break away from him, and the two fall off the side of a waterfall.

Back on the beach, Ray surfs while Aisha looks at shells along the shore. Ray returns and tells Stick that he should come and swim. Stick declines, so Ray forces him into the water. Stick doesn’t get in beyond waist level and says it’s his first time in the ocean. Ray recalls that Mars doesn’t have any oceans, so he decides to teach Stick how to swim. Stick then gets pulled under by a wave, and both Houquet and Aisha laugh at him. Mint helps Jim with repairs and feels depressed because she thinks no one will want to marry her now. Yellow chases after Solzie and asks why she’s running away from him. She eventually leads him to a field, and he’s surprised to see the Gosu. She then jumps into the cockpit and takes off, and Yellow realizes she’s an Inbit. Stick sits down next to Aisha and accidentally touches her, which makes her embarrassed. She then senses the presence of Inbit, and Stick says they’ll use the plan they devised. They send out the two unmanned Cutters to draw the attention of the Eagers. After luring them far enough away, the boats fire missiles at the Eagers. Battlar detects the source controlling the boats and heads for the island. Yellow returns and tells Houquet and Ray that the Inbit have a human pilot. Battlar and Solzie open fire on the island and are counterattacked by the Legiosses. Jim uses the PT Boat’s cannon to destroy a damaged Eager heading toward them. Yellow lands the TLEAD so that Stick can dock his Eta Legioss with it. Stick tells Houquet and Ray to lure the Inbit in front of the PT Boat. Solzie approaches the PT Boat head on and suddenly stops when she sees Yellow. Her Gosu is hit from behind by Houquet’s Zeta Legioss, so she falls back. Yellow then fires several missiles that destroy the Eagers and force Battlar to fall back. As everyone escapes, Solzie thinks to herself that Yellow is a beautiful man. As the PT Boat approaches land, Yellow wonders why Solzie didn’t shoot at him. With North America finally in sight, Stick says to himself that their next stop is Reflex Point.

Commentary

Quite a bit of things happen in this episode. On a geographical note, I’m not sure why the group decides to skip Mexico and Central America. Maybe for pacing reasons and the number of episodes left it was decided to get the team to North America now. The Refless evolves two more Inbit into humanoid forms like Aisha, but Battlar and Solzie are made into pilots. The team has an unexpected stop off at an abandoned island resort. This leads to some lighter moments, including Stick’s failure to swim properly as a result of being a Martian. It also leads to Yellow having an encounter with Solzie, and he has quite the impact on her. I don’t know what it is about Yellow, but every time that the guy sees a river, he feels compelled to strip naked and jump in. A battle inevitably occurs, and that chance encounter at the river ends up saving Yellow, Mint and Jim from getting killed. Even for the early 80s, this is nothing new exactly – good guy meets female enemy pilot and has an effect on her. It’s really not any different from the Max and Milia subplot from Macross.
