The Zeon military had already begun to develop improvements for its aging space combat use MS-06F Zaku II during the One Year War. The first of these improved models was the MS-06RP Zaku II RP, which featured additional thrusters on the legs, overall greater acceleration and maneuverability and increased propellant storage capacity. Two units were produced, both operated by test pilot Elliot Rem – a former member of Zeonic Company’s development team and author of the pilot’s manual for the original MS-05B Zaku I. Upon Rem’s approval of the design, the RP underwent a few last minute minor modifications and the revised MS-06R-1 Zaku II R-1 began trial production.
