Although most mobile suits were used in combat, some were designated for civilian use. In C.E. 71, former Astray project technician Yoon Sefan designed a civilian use mobile suit, the MWF-JG71 Raysta (its name being an anagram of Astray). In addition to the standard Raysta, Yoon also designed a custom Raysta for herself. At first, the Raysta was exclusively manufactured by the Junk Guild for their use, but it was later rented out to civilians. However, the rental came with the condition that the Raysta unit not be outfitted with weapons or used in combat. Soon after the Bloody Valentine War, photojournalist Jess Rabble rented a Raysta to investigate GENESIS Alpha, recently captured by the Junk Guild. In C.E. 73, the Junk Guild equipped its Raystas with beam rifles and bazookas to defend GENESIS Alpha from an Earth Alliance attack.
