Jupiter [Zeus] in Operation Titan UC 0083
In UC 0083, the Earth Federation Forces engage in combat against Zeon remnants near Jupiter. Several Guncannons are destroyed by the Valkyrie, a Newtype mobile suit capable of all-range attacks and piloted by Haman Karn. Char Aznable, piloting a Gyan EX, notes that Haman has improved considerably and took down eight enemy suits in an instant. New enemies enter combat range, and when Amuro spots a Gundam he wonders if Amuro Ray is the pilot. The Gundam gets a shot off on Char and destroys the Gyan EX’s left arm. Haman attempts to come to Char’s aid, but the Gundam manages to damage her as well. Char tells Haman not to let her emotions cloud her judgement and he suggests falling back for now. The two escape and the Gundam pilot, Paptimus Scirocco, decides not to pursue. Scirocco determines that the Gundam really isn’t for him and decides to return to the Jupitris.
The Dog of War UC 0092
During the One Year War, Zeon hid several nuclear missiles underground near M’Quve’s mining base. Twelve years later, Neo Zeon initiates an operation to retrieve the missiles. In space, Frederick F. Brown’s team prepares to launch in Geara Dogas equipped with ballutes for atmospheric entry. A Hawkeye recon suit picks up multiple incoming EFF Jegans. The Geara Dogas deploy their ballutes and open fire on the Jegans as they make planetfall. The Geara Dogas successfully land in the designated drop zone – a jungle on Earth. Brown checks in with his team, which includes J. Maua, G.S. Tarkin, Raymond O. Paulo, Ridley S.S. Gross and Ralph H. Mesh. Brown explains to the team that they have to travel 60 clicks west to a canal to rendezvous with a Mad Angler sub. The team begins moving through the jungle but is quickly spotted by an EFF aircraft. Several GM IIIs are dropped into the jungle and engage in combat with Brown’s team. The team destroys several units, but more keep appearing, so Brown orders his men to disengage. However, the tide begins to turn when reinforcement Z’Gok II units arrive from the Mad Angler. The EFF aircraft pulls back to rearm and regroup. Brown’s team reaches the sub and begins traveling underwater. Mechanics work on the Geara Dogas, and Brown asks them to apply desert camo. Paulo voices confusion about the mission and notes that Neo Zeon must have 10-20 nuclear missiles, so why risk resources for this operation? Tarkin steps in and explains that you need uranium-235 to make nuclear missiles, and that substance is found only on Earth and under EFF control. So even one intact nuclear missile is worth the risk. The sub deactivates its engines when they pick up an EFF destroyer on sonar. The captain orders the mobile suits to launch, and at the same time the EFF ship deploys its Aqua GMs. The Neo Zeon forces destroy the Aqua GMs, and the sub fires missiles to sink the destroyer.
The sub transports Brown’s team to the Indian Ocean with a plan to make landfall at the Strait of Hormuz. Brown explains that the sub will hide in the Indian Ocean and return in a week to pick them up. Z’Gok’s launch and encounter resistance from the heavily fortified coast. Brown’s team launches from the sub and joins the battle on the shore, destroying enemy units. An EFF base gets a distress call from the battle and mobilizes reinforcements, including the massive G-Commander mobile fortress. Several large EFF aircraft take off and head for the battlefield. Brown’s team sends an encrypted message to the sub, but it’s intercepted by an EFF aircraft. The aircraft changes course to intercept and drops several suits, including a Gundam Mk-III. Brown’s team destroys several enemy units and drops a smoke screen to escape. The aircraft receives an urgent message from headquarters outlining the true nature of the Neo Zeon mission. The chasing units continue to attack Brown’s team, and the aircraft aids with some overhead bombardment. The EFF suits then fall back as the aircraft deploys the massive G-Commander. The team moves in to attack, but Maua’s unit is quickly destroyed. Brown orders Tarkin to join him in acting as decoys while Paulo, Mesh and Gross head for the objective. The EFF aircraft continues with overhead bombardment while Brown and Tarkin attempt to fight the G-Commander. The rest of the team opens fire on the aircraft and brings it down. However, the explosion from the crashing aircraft sets off the nuclear missile buried underground. Brown emerges as the sole survivor, having used the massive body of the G-Commander as a shield to protect from the nuclear blast.
Side Operation of the Zeon UC 0092
In UC 0092, multiple Gaws deployed by Neo Zeon prepare to launch their mobile suits. Brown, piloting a Jaguar I, is joined by a ground Sazabi. Elsewhere, the EFF ground-based mobile armor G-Ray picks up the Gaws on sensors and prepares to attack. The G-Ray opens fire and immediately takes out two Gaws. Brown’s Gaw is also damaged and contact with the bridge is lost. Brown and his men are forced to pry the hatch open so they can escape from the Gaw before it’s destroyed. Geara Doga G pilot Marcie falls out of the Gaw and is killed when his suit crashes into the ground and explodes. The G-Ray then deploys four Jegans to search for Brown and other Neo Zeon pilots who managed to land. The Neo Zeon forces destroy the Jegans but then come under fire from the G-Ray. Despite the G-Ray’s heavy armaments, Brown thinks they can win if they attack its thrusters at point blank range. Pilot Cray serves as a decoy while Brown moves in to attack the G-Ray. Cray is killed, but Brown successfully damages the G-Ray’s hover system before destroying the mobile armor completely. Despite Brown having destroyed the G-Ray, Neo Zeon combat reports had no record of the battle.
10 Minute War UC 0079
In December UC 0079, a Zeon Mad Angler submarine picks up an EFF craft transporting a mobile suit over the water. The sub’s commander wants to gather more intel and orders Gogg pilots Bergman and Jochen to launch from a Grublo and engage. Above the surface, the Gundam Submarine is dropped off on an EFF ship. As the Zeon forces open fire, the Gundam Submarine launches and jumps into the water. It engages the Goggs and the Grublo in combat and destroys Bergman’s suit. The Grublo destroys the EFF ship before escaping with Jochen’s Gogg.
Waves are High in the South Indian Ocean UC 0092
In UC 0092, Neo Zeon subs travel through the Indian Ocean to rescue Brown. In the midst of this, four men find themselves caught in the crossfire and stranded on a small raft. One of them blames their boss and his revolutionary dreams for getting them into this situation. Their bickering ends when they spot a ship and are rescued. They realize that the crew is Neo Zeon, and one of the men spots an EFF patrol boat in the distance. The ship, identified as a camouflaged Neo Zeon vessel, comes under fire from the EFF patrol boat. Several Zetas are deployed to attack the ship from the air. The ship comes under fire and is destroyed, but the four men manage to escape again in their raft. Now, they’re in the same situation as they were before.
Compared to the first Record of MS Wars, this volume consists of five stories written across a few years. Jupiter [Zeus] is a brief opener and is most notable for featuring Char, Haman and Scirocco, as well as showing Haman’s development as a pilot. The majority of this volume belongs to The Dog of War, a more ambitious story that focuses on Brown and his team attempting to recover an old Zeon nuke. Nothing goes well for Brown’s team on this mission and it ends in failure. Side Operation again focuses on Brown and features another battle against a large EFF unit. 10 Minute War is a slight story focusing on a Zeon maritime unit fighting the Gundam Submarine – it’s nothing special. Finally, South Indian Ocean is a complete tonal shift from the other stories and features four hapless refugees on a raft who go through a series of misadventures. Overall, there’s nothing too special about the shorter stories, and I think I would’ve preferred it if the entire volume was focused on The Dog of War to flesh it out more. Still, it’s a decent read if you enjoy manga side stories by Kondo.
