Patlabor the Movie is a theatrical film released in Japan in 1989. It is the first film in the Patlabor franchise and is set in the same continuity as the Early Days OVA series. The movie’s creative staff includes multiple HEADGEAR members, including director Mamoru Oshii, writer Kazunori Ito, mechanical designer Yutaka Izubuchi and character designer Akemi Takeda. The film’s score was composed by Kenji Kawai. Set in 1999, the story focuses on SV2’s investigations of a series of mysterious incidents where Labors suddenly go berserk without any pilot input. The movie was followed four years later by a sequel, Patlabor 2 the Movie. The movie was previously released on home video in North America by Manga Entertainment and Bandai Visual USA, but it has since been re-released by Sentai Filmworks’ Maiden Japan label.
